Hi guys,

i've just downloaded bitcoin and a friend has sent me some bitcoin to my wallet.

however its out of sync and its been like it for 24 hours...

I'm new so some sort of guidance to maybe how long its going to be or how to speed up the process?

i do't want to download it via torrent as I've already made a transfer...

many thanks

I think you will have to wait synchronization (charging all blocks) finish and then  your bitcoins will arrive.

But you can use the Multbit portfolio and thus do not need to wait for loading of all blocks.

Its taking a long time only due to downloading the whole blockchain, but like someone mentioned above you can consider light weight wallets that dont download the whole chain.

Multibit, electrum are the few.

I use a mac as well with a split os of windows 7. On the mac I use btcqt, I let it run while I use the lighter wallets to do right now stuff until the other wallet loads.

It does not matter mac or windows if you use full client with blockchain it takes a long time.   It's just getting bigger and bigger.

it will download the big blockchain (around 30GB in size), so sync time will depend on your internet speed how fast it can download the blockchain, alt option is light wallet like multibit, armory etc that don't download blockchain

I am using Multibit on Mac. It`s faster, but I would recommend to leave it running all the time. For each start you need to wait for inital synchronization as well.
