I am looking to work on a small addon to Electrum just to learn the client. I need something cool to do.

Would you be interested in a new field, similar to the "fee" field, but instead tips the electrum server which you are currently using?

That might be a good idea.  Personally, I'm just going to send a larger donation from time to time -- something like $10-20.  I have it marked on a calendar so I don't forget.  But this could work well, too, m' thinks.

Brilliant idea!

A simple field next to miner's fee which says "Electrum Server Tip/Donate" or something like that would be really very useful. And help the server runners run their servers far more effectively.

that is an awesome idea. if you can associate the donation field's bitcoin address to the bitcoin address of the current server that the client is connected to, it is going to be awesome.

Weak hands have been complaining about missing out ever since bitcoin was $1 and never buy the dip.

You know.. MultiBit was working on something like this for their new HD version, but I don't know whether they added it or not.  You can read about their proposal here:
Introducing BRIT
https://multibit.org/blog/2014/04/11/multibit-hd-brit.html

Seemed like a GREAT idea to me!  Whether the little bit per transaction goes to the developers or to the servers doesn't matter, I don't think.  And if the software has an opt-out for those that don't want to do it, or a way to adjust the amount to give.. so much the better.

It will look like this in settings:

I will initially parse the welcome message for bitcoin addresses but later this may be added to the protocol. Stay tuned.
