I don't know whether the meetup was active or not, but it's a chance for someone to step in and fulfill that role.

This group in San Francisco is quite active and meets monthly: http://www.meetup.com/San-Francisco-Bitcoin-Social/

A bit of a drive from Sunnyvale, but a good option.
