It seems like many coins are either destroyed by huge botnets or asics.

If you have electricity price of less than $0.06/kWh and use the latest sgminer with fast bins, then it might be profitable. Because you only have 1 GPU, if you do not use the PC for other purpose, and leave the PC on for mining only, it is not profitable. The system power consumption is too high for profit.

If you buy GPU for mining, then do not do it. If you already have GPU, then you can mine with the PC is on. It is not profitable to mine if your electricity cost is >$0.08/kWh and use the public miners. The bigger farms have access to cheap electricity and fast private miners. They are profitable, but not much.

At home? I'd say start with COUCH coin, using the binaries posted by "BeneathTheCushions". Should be able to get you ~ .50-.60 USD per day.
