...

(Hey, if this is the wrong place for this thread, just move it!  Smile)

*   *   *

I have read in a place or two (nothing very serious-looking though, conspiratorial in fact) that our pals at NSA (maybe others too) have already found a way to compromise TOR.

OK, I do know that TOR's main use is to hide from "traffic analysis" (although there are other positive uses for people very interested in privacy or buying drugs), but that's about all I know.  I have never used TOR, and am reluctant to go down that rabbit hole into the Darknet, seems dangerous!

Well, so anyone who is knowledgeable about TOR, please fill us in!  A bulletproof secret way of doing things could be appealing. *

* Yes, I already know that keystroke loggers (etc.) could follow anyone's travels in cyberspace, and I am interested in hearing about anything like that too.

First of all I think TOR discussion is definitely not Bitcoin Discussion more like Service Discussion in my opinion. And to be honest I did not heard about TOR
being compromised, where did you hear it? I would assume TOR is fine, but now I am curious about that. Can you provide a link to this information?

Yes, if the mods decide that another place is better, then they are right!  Smiley

Like I mentioned, I have no solid basis for believing that TOR has been compromised, but I have read from a Conspiritard™ or two (hey but maybe they are right?) that say so.  NSA employs a TONNE of PhD mathematicians.

But, I know little, I kicked off this thread to learn.

TOR has been compromised, but not directly.

If your computer has been hacked correctly, the hacker can watch what you are doing with TOR or anything else. It is reasonably easy to place programs on your hard drive, programs that don't have any standard directory listing at all. Sure, these programs can be overwritten if you use your computer actively. But with the size of hard drives these days, few people completely fill them with "stuff." So, there is a lot of room for these hidden programs. Your best bet is to "wipe" the empty parts of your hard drive on a regular basis. This wiping will generally remove hidden programs like these. The more people who do regular wipes like this, the fewer red flags will be raised when you do a wipe.

The NSA has a communications center that is attempting to watch all Internet communications. Using probability algorithms, they can watch which sites are being accessed at the same time that there is activity by any users. This, along with certain connectivity and IP action, shows them which users are making connections. They may not be able to see from this what the user is doing at the site. But if the site happens to be a controversial site, they can tell whose computers they have to hack.

The old TOR was able to be observed, easily this way. But the present TOR rotates its connections among its members constantly, while a user is onsite. This makes it very difficult to "guess" which user is active with which site by the activity timing method. Hopefully this connectivity rotating is not being done on a standard time length. The length of time between rotations should vary regularly during a user's session.

In addition, the NSA has communications agreements with many of the ISPs, to filter all their users' activity.

I would never trust tor with something important.  It's hard to tell what currently works or does not work against it.  It has had multiple exploits in past.

And as long as it needs a exit node there is always a chance of seeing your traffic.

Tor is not what it was. NSA knows everything. Anyone knows who's Tor's successor?

You should use a dedicated OS for using TOR such as Tails
https://tails.boum.org/
Tails can easily be installed onto a USB stick, and booted from that.

It's far too easy to leak your IP address using TOR from inside your existing OS. Don't even think about using it from inside Windows.

Has TOR been compromised? Well, we don't really know. You can read a leaked Snowden document entitled "Tor Stinks" and make your own decision.

Honestly, I wouldn't trust Tor for any Bitcoin related stuff. Treat it as compromised and stick with your own PC.
