I would be receiving btc again to my electrum wallet. I only did 1 transaction where i received btc to my electrum and 1 transaction where i send btc from electrum to another site.
First off, i read its not good idea to use same btc address for more than 1 transaction? First off this doesn't make sense b/c if you receive btc to an address, u have to eventually send btc to another site. Thus unless you send the whole amt... then you still have btc there. So is there something im missing here? Because if you send 1 btc, then 2btc etc... and have around 10 there... then its going to take few transactions. Or does it refer to receiving btc only?
I was told one shouldn't do this even after 1 transaction whether sending or receiving from one address. Is that true/false? I read it has to do with anonymity.
The reason is because i have around 7.xxxx btc in my electrum wallet in a certain address and i want to receive another 10 btc from a site on the same address. Thus i want 17.xxxxx btc in that address and not 7.xxxxx in this one and 10 btc in another one. I done 2 transactions total with that address, receiving btc from a site, and sending some btc to another site.
I believe one address i read in electrum u can do up to 1000 total transactions before u use another address?
So for now is it fine if i use the current one? Also, is it safer to have 7.xxxx btc in one address and 10 btc in another address or just keeping the whole amt of btc in one address or its the same thing? I read ppl say you shouldn't put all your eggs in one basket like btc but just want to know if theres any difference with keeping the btc in electrum this way or its the same thing basically. Obviously if you keep 7 btc in electrum and say 10 btc in multibit, its different. But wondering if different address mean anything.
Also heres the thing. In my electrum wallet, it shows main account which has my btc and then 5 different address with 0 btc that says receiving. I know these are the other 5 address electrum generates for me. However, the btc address that i used to receive btc and sent... its my main account ... but why is it i dont see the address on it? It just shows main account. I do know the address of the main accoutn by going to history as my first transaction was me receiving btc from a site. So if i want to receive btc to the same btc address, then its that one right? But it feels weird it not being on the main account since right clicking it... u can't copy the btc address. Can someone explain this?

Every time you send BTC you DO send the entire amount of each input to an address up to the amount being sent plus fee and includes inputs of other addresses as necessary. Every time you receive btc to an address it is a separate input and are entities upon themselves. What you don't spend is returned as "change" usually to a new address, which is commonly referred to as a change address. The bitcoin protocol does not allow any portion of a input to be spent. Each time the entire input is sent. So if you have 1 bitcoin in one address as one input and you send someone .05 btc with a .0001 tx fee, 0.9499 btc will be returned to you as change, usually to a new address unless you clicked the option in electrum to not use change addresses, then the change will be returned as a new input to the same address it was sent from. Every time you receive money, electrum will show a new address to receive the next payment and each time you send btc a new change address will be used.

No, that is not correct. You can resuse a btc addresss as many times as you want forever. Each time btc is received it is an input to that address. When you send money inputs are put together until there is enough btc to cover the amount you are sending plus the fee and the change is returned. It is suggested you use a new address each time for more privacy, as reusing an address repeatedly can help anyone attempting to link a particular address to who owns it. You do not have to use a new address. For many purposes, like payments from people, you give them an address once and they repeatedly send btc to it. You can even give out an address to any number of people. The number of times you reuse is address is up to you. |

Because every time you receive a payment a new address will be presented for payments once you restart electrum or click new. All addresses show in the history tab are valid and can be resued. If a used address has a zero balance click the arrow next to used and it will show you all prior used addresses that now have a zero balance. You are thinking about bitcoin wrong. There is no main account and you don't actually have a wallet and you don't actually possess any bitcoin. Balances are held in addresses in the blockchain. Only the person with the private (secret) key can spend the bitcoin but anyone can look at the addresses in the blockchain to see how much btc is in that address. That is why programs like Electrum try to use a new address for every transaction; to keep how much bitcoin you own in total private. The seed is used by a deterministic heuristic algorithm to generate addresses. It can generate an infinite number of address and private keys. |

just noticed this.. but when i click on the arrow next to USED... it shows that bitcoin address that i did previous transactions with. Such as tx and 2 next to it. That means total of 2 transactions done with it right since thats how many i done total? 1 sending and 1 receiving?

Can someone tell me which is my current bitcoin address now? I took a look and the one that i used for 2 transactions... i had around 20btc there... then sent around 12 btc... so have around 8btc there. However... apparently the 8btc is no longer in that bitcoin address but its in another one now?

There is no current address. You can use any of them. They are all your addresses and current forever. If you want to use an unused address just use the next one in the list. If the receive tab is showing you a used address, click new to get the next address in line. You are way over thinking it. There is no current address. You can use any of them. They are all your addresses and current forever. If you want to use an unused address just use the next one in the list. ONce i got those 20 btc, i then sent around 12 btc to a site.... then i had 8 btc total. Howver, those 8 btc are now in another address of mine. Is that how it works? Thus where i first received my btc, its no longer there b/c each time i send btc to someone, those btc still remaining goes to another btc address of mine? why does it show under receiving used 5 addresses and no transactions yet under it it has the word change and 4 different addresses with 1 address having my 8 btc then? So i could use any of those 9 addresses to receive the btc? So if i receive it in any one thats not the one with 8 btc, it still shows total amt of btc in my electrum thus 8 plus whatever i receive? That's because you ask questions and then don't read the answers people give you: Every time you send BTC you DO send the entire amount of each input to an address up to the amount being sent plus fee and includes inputs of other addresses as necessary. Every time you receive btc to an address it is a separate input and are entities upon themselves. What you don't spend is returned as "change" usually to a new address, which is commonly referred to as a change address. The bitcoin protocol does not allow any portion of a input to be spent. Each time the entire input is sent. So if you have 1 bitcoin in one address as one input and you send someone .05 btc with a .0001 tx fee, 0.9499 btc will be returned to you as change, usually to a new address unless you clicked the option in electrum to not use change addresses, then the change will be returned as a new input to the same address it was sent from. Every time you receive money, electrum will show a new address to receive the next payment and each time you send btc a new change address will be used.
BTW you haven't even told us what version of electrum you are using. The "receive" tab in 1.9.x and the "addresses" tab in 2.0.x are functionally equivalent. They list all the addresses *you* own. jackbox talks about electrum showing you a new address to receive to. That's Electrum 2.0.x functionality. In 1.9.x all the addresses are listed on the receive tab and you can pick a new one or an old one as you see fit. The history tab lists transactions which include your addresses *and* other people's addresses. So don't pick any address from the history tab to receive money to. |

Okay so right now one address of mine under change has the 8 btc. I will be requesting around 21 btc. So if i choose any of the 9 addresses except the the under change that has the address with 8 btc,
does that mean it will show 21 btc at an address... then the current one with my 8 btc will have another address? But if i send it directly to this address with the 8btc... then it will show 29btc total as oppose to 8 btc this one and 21 btc in another one?

Can someone answer this part? Going to request the btc later. Yes, but it does not matter. The addresses are irrelevant. Each send to an address is a separate input and is like having multiple coins in your pocket. Does not matter which address you send it to or what the balance of each address is. All you care about is that you control the private keys which makes you the "owner" of the btc in these addresses. |
