It might sound like something straight out of Q’s laboratory or the latest Marvel film but a group of scientists in California have successfully created eye drops that temporarily enable night vision.

Science for the Masses, an independent “citizen science” organisation that operates from the city of Tehacapi, theorised that Chlorin e6 (Ce6), a natural molecule that can be created from algae and other green plants, could enhance eyesight in dark environments.

The molecule is found in some deep sea fish, forms the basis of some cancer therapies and has been previously prescribed intravenously for night blindness.

I wonder how many deep sea fish they require to make that eye drops.

I would any day prefer goggles to actually putting drops in my eyes. I would be scared about the side effects.

It says that more research will need to be conducted to measure the actual amount of electrical stimulation increase in the eye whilst the long term effects of the procedure will require further investigation.

Sounds like another one of those "scientists discover cure to cancer" news articles that you read once, and never hear about ever again.

If anything, we will all be old and grey before a product like this is widely available for purchase.

Yeah let them try on themselves a couple of times and if they don't get blind, I would still not use it and wait till they try on some more people and wait some more months till it is confirmed that there are no delayed side-effects. And then I'll ask some people I know/Don't like to try it and if everything's ok and they're fine then I might consider using it, in-fact I might not use it even then coz you never know.

I wonder how many deep sea fish they require to make that eye drops.

they don't need to kill any deep sea fish to make it. Ce6 is made from Chlorella (fresh water algae) and some green plants. so they can just grow some Chlorella and make it.
Ce6 could also damage your eyes.

Yeah I'd be a bit wary of putting something like that in my eyes, even if the drops do come from natural substances.

Would be epic if they could make night vision glasses (maybe even contact lenses), I'm sure there are plenty of military contracters who would find technology like that very useful.

^^^ Besides, most people who go in for a standard, yearly, eye exam, get their eyes dilated with eye drops. Then they make you wear those goofy sunglasses until the effects of the dilation wear off.

Try your vision outside at night after being dilated by your eye doctor. You can see much better in the dark for a while.

Wonder how expensive these fucking things are, and who would be able to obtain and use them for -- not so good purposes.

Imagine what the US military (and others have) around the world, if this is what our private researchers are allowed to tell us about?

A friend of mine just bought the night vision stuff with the last COD game, shit was pretty wild and that was a cheap device. Imagine what a couple hundred thousand dollars gets you.

That sounds quite useless given that, even if the game won't let you adjust settings, both the monitor and the OS controls would (ie. gamma slider).

Of course the military and other security forces would be the most "volunteer" test subjects, lets hope it doesn't have any nasty side effects...

The question is: gene modification to have that fish eye when?

No it's not something that is used in the game itself, it's for your own personal use. Me and some friends were screwing around with it with all the lights off, and it was INSANE how it worked.

It's not like an addon to wear during the game, it's something that you use personally. Look it up as well.

If you are talking about a physical device, it is probably just a IR illuminator, they are dirt cheap and sold as kids toys.

Eh I mean, not a kids toy. Actually a tad on the expensive side (in my mind, probably not in the world of night vision goggles). $200 for the game, some other collectors stuff, and for this.

I guess that would peg the price for this thing around $120ish?Huh? Does that count as a shitty kids toy (Not being a dick, just don't know the going rate for things like this)

"professional" IR illuminators start around the $100 range so the price you are targeting is about right, but the fact is it is just a big boy toy. IR illuminators are fun, but they aren't "night vision" as most people understand it and have some serious limitations. They have their uses, but at the end of the day it is still just a digital camera with some IR LEDs in a cool looking headset made to look like actual military night vision.

Makes sense. When we were all messing around with it we were saying that it was just a straight image --  had no depth perception or anything like that. Which I guess is to be expected out of something which is just illuminating and is $120.

Big boy toy......

I can only imagine what the government / cia is using.

Makes sense. When we were all messing around with it we were saying that it was just a straight image --  had no depth perception or anything like that. Which I guess is to be expected out of something which is just illuminating and is $120.

Big boy toy......

I can only imagine what the government / cia is using.

The real night vison/thermal goggles will instantly make you realize that is a big boy toy. They run off of moonlight and shit like that (or even just star light), its pretty nuts. You don't have to be the government, just spend $500-$5000. Another fun use for the illuminator... take it outside at night and see stars you have never seen because they only give off IR light.

Wow this is exciting, it feels like something straight out of a science fiction movie. I doubt it's gets public commercial use, it sounds like it fits perfect for the military or game hunting uses. No more expensive night vision equipment, just drop in a few eye droplets and temporarily gain an extra sensory perception with your sight. It might sound crazy but I wonder if they can do infrared droplets. Maybe an echolocation droplet for the ears next, or X-ray vision like SuperMan  Cool
