The picture of your level is certainly flat... if you have a flat screen, that is. But in space, the real level has ovaloid or ellipsoid bubbles in it.

The thing that you are looking at when you look 3 miles from a height of 6 feet is the water line. At the distance of almost 3 miles you see the whole ship except what is under the water. Depending on the height of the topmost part of the ship, you can see the top several more miles out as it descends over the horizon.

If the water was invisible, and if there was no refraction of either water or atmosphere, you would be able to see the whole ship through the water, and the horizon wouldn't be apparent.
