I recently have come across an offer for next to nothing due to the sellers financial situation a 1Th dragon bitcoin miner. I have 2 questions that any help with would be much appreciated.

Whats the quickest way to tell if it is still functioning at full capacity?

Even if it is functioning at full capacity is it profitable considering the electricity required to run this.

Quickest way is to set it up and run it.  Chances are within 20 minutes you will know if all blades work.

I would ask what is your electricity price?  The dragon 1T's are becoming obsolete.

You can verify this with either the asic status page or the hashrate on the device or pool.

Profitability depends on how much you pay for power and how much you are paying for the miner.

you need 5 cent a kwatt power to make that dragon worthwhile to run.

Rasberry pi- based dragon miners
Lcd display on the front shows local ip address and temp of each blade

There is not a chance it's new.  LKETC is who was making them mainly, and I doubt they have done it for a while.

Also the LCD model was nice but a older model.  So again not a new unit.   The newest units had no LCD front's.   

And I feel safe saying all units were in burn in tests, or mining.  They do not sit in boxes. 

So long story short your being lied to about it being new or even most current model of the LKETC A1's.

Be extremley careful. I would avoid it. Apparently Joshua Zipkin of AMT (and known scammer see AMT_Miners profile) has been pulling this exact scam on people and not delivering. Where is your "seller" located?

With description sounds like 2nd generation lketc a1 dragon to me.  On 2nd gen they went to 4 blades from 5 and went to standing more pc case, and kept the lcd.

I think 3rd gen and later no LCD.  I think some had better heatsinks on latter gens but not 100 percent sure on that.

And no matter what it's not a new unit.

As for method of purchase it is on craigslist very close to me so I could pick it up which would eliminate the possibility of a scam except for the fact that its craigslist and thats why i asked if there is a quick method to test if everything is operating properly internally. Either way thanks for all of the great responses.

Not a problem.  If you are able to get it from their house would be best on craigslist.  That way you can check out and see it working.  It would be hard to meet them somewhere and try it out.

I love to help fellow BTC miners out Here is my advice to get a little bit off that price.

1)Ask if it's a 5 or 4 blade.  Most likely it is a 4 blade which are at their max freq. 
2) Ask if it has initial or a replacement psu-  a lot of the original dragons psu's have started to crap out they were nothing fancy just cheap 1100 or 1000 watt psu's.
3)If you mention ebay auction prices and that it sounds like 2nd batch I bet you could get a little lower price.   

Hopefully if you go down that list on a call you can get it closer to 200-250 .  Worth a shot at least.  Most go under 300 but you have to pay shipping on them so it kinda equals out

Nice that sounds like a plan plus i dont need to pay for shipping considering its less than a mile away. Just making sure.... As long as i pay a low amount per kw its worth it?

I don't think CoinCraft A1 chips with 0.35W/GHs are obsolete. My 1.95T Dragon miner runs at 0.79W/GHs at full speed, now due to limited power source it is 1.75T at 0.7W/GHs. I am sure I can hit the same or better ratio than you can hit with other chips around except Bitmain BM1384.

Can you link to miner?  We can tell a lot more from the model.   2.5T is a odd hash amount I'm not sure what model it is.

It's being sold with the 1 th miner but as far as I know it's still a raspberry pi miner made by ASIC with 8 blades instead of 4 and it does not have any lcd display.

Point of comparison:

Bitmain S5, shipped from stock (new): $340 + $45 in shipping. Paid with Bitcoin.

Same new S5 via DHgate is about $402 (shipped) if you use a Credit Card.

Recently visited Bimtain website and that's what they quote.

I'm guessing it's the A1 2TH.   They are becoming inefficient compared to current gen.  So it would depend on the price of unit and price of your electricity.

Some of those miners have a firmware where you can set voltage and clockspeed.It's with 2 powers and can be used with just one but only 6 blades and undervoltaged.I use mine with 1400w and 1.8TH.
