Transactions must be included in a block to be properly completed. When you send a transaction, it is broadcast to miners. Miners can then optionally include it in their next blocks. Miners will be more inclined to include your transaction if it has a higher transaction fee.

difficulty just jumped and already at 10.6 blocks per hour (supposed to be 6 right?)

I'll bet the executives in the AMD boardroom are already discussing a specialty line of graphics cards just for Bitcoiners.  That would be pretty cool, actually.  I can envision some optimizations that would give us better hash/$ and hash/watt figures.  

This is all pretty amazing when you consider how far we've come in the last year.  Certainly one of the more exciting projects I've been involved with over the years.
