What happens if someone send me bitcoins but my computer & wallet are down?

Bitcoin mining is now a specialized and very risky industry, just like gold mining. Amateur miners are unlikely to make much money, and may even lose money. Bitcoin is much more than just mining, though!

Next time you load Bitcoin with your wallet attached it will catch up on the block chain and update your balance accordingly. |

I haven't.... got copies all over the place If you loose your wallet then that's it, those Bitcoins are gone for good (well unless you find/recover your wallet again). Hence always keep a backup (even an old one) so you can rebuild the block chain and keep access to the money. |

Ok so say I have a copy of my wallet.dat file on a USB stick and it's in my fire safe, and another copy in a TrueCrypt volume stored on Dropbox, it would not matter what version was restored? Which ever restored copy would "catch up"? What happens if you restore it to two different PC's? Can the same wallet.dat file be in existence at the same time?  Thanks. |

Whichever had more bitcoins in it would be the one you would want to restore, and no, don't keep 2 of the same wallets running at the same time.

You could have as many wallets running as you want. They aren't like physical wallets, each holding their own unique coins. Your BTC wallets will refer to/point to the same coins. You could liken it to a bank account with multiple debit cards. Each card basically allows you to spend the money in that account. |
