mobo affect gpu overclock?

Does the motherboard have any impact on the overclock of a gpu? I would assume not but I have 6 5850's, 3 in one system and 3 in another. The one system has all 3 overclocked to 900+mhz (920, 930 and 950) while the other 3 max out at 900mhz (800, 850 and 900mhz). Maybe just luck of the draw?

All stock BIOS and voltage too, btw.

The MB shouldn't affect your GPU's OC. If you're really concerned about it, try swapping 2 of the cards and verifying that you can reach the same clocks as before.

Thats what I thought, just wanted a second opinion on it. Maybe I will swap out two cards...

MoBo can and does affect OC since it's delivers 75 watts across the PCIe bus and if that power sags and dips it does affect performance. How good the power circuitry is on the motherboard is almost as important as how good it is on the GPU.

There are also other minor issues between boards like what kind of system links PCIE to the CPU and how fast that is (how well hyper transport is working on AMD for example) etc etc...

Even PCIe frequency variation can affect OC to minor degrees.

So yes, different boards will give different GPU speeds.
