Isis drives Iraqi troops out of stronghold to strengthen its grip on Ramadi

Iraqi troops have been forced out of most of Ramadi by Islamic State forces, consolidating the militant group’s control over the capital of Anbar province, which covers more than one-third of the country.

Isis militants raised their flags over the government compound in the centre of the city on Friday little more than 12 hours after using car bombs to breach blast walls and open a path for fighters who stormed a police headquarters and military base.

Ramadi, and in general Anbar as a whole is almost entirely populated by the Sunni Arabs. For the last 10 years or so, the Shiite-dominated central government has antagonized them with various policies targeted specifically against the Sunnis. As a result, the IS is able to recruit tens of thousands of soldiers from various cities and towns in Anbar. It will be very difficult to defeat them.
