Welcome to the official thread for Navdiy

We are a young, dynamic startup located in the Netherlands and Belgium.
Our goal is to launch the Navdiy project and create a better, less expensive device, capable of doing the things you need multiple devices for.

Please read below for our community bounties and rewards.

The Navdiy project - The idea behind it

Some while ago, driving in my car, stucked between speed camera's and traffic jams, i've noticed how many devices i had running in an effort to control those elements.
I had my standalone navigation device, my Coyote speed camera device, and my cell phone using Waze navigation to avoid traffic jam and have realtime, community driven traffic information on my route.

I needed a 3 way 12v hub to power all those devices, waisting energy. But the total costs of those devices is what kept me thinking;

Standalone navigation: Purchase price at ~350$
Coyote device: Purchase price at ~200$

That alone was a cost of ~550$. Now, those companies are really clever, since the services they provide you are on annual subscription fee base.
Every year, on top of the initial 550$ purchase price, i had to pay ~100$ for the realtime traffic on my navigation device, and ~150$ for the coyote system.

That is an annual cost of about ~250$

All those services are available for free on my Android device.
It includes navigation, more updated then my navigation device, realtime traffic information, driven by realtime users on the route, speed camera warnings, and so on.

The total cost for this? 0$ flat. But then i noticed the battery draining running this apps, and the overheating problem due to charging all day.
Back home, having all this factors in my mind, i started sketching a device that could do all this, in a single standalone, affordable device.

A new concept was born.

Navdiy concept and specifications

I managed to assemble a working navigation device, running Android, so users can use any navigation software they preffer.
The specifications of the used parts are

  • Arduino/Raspberry PI controller board
  • 4.3" touchscreen display
  • WCDMA and HSPA 3G networks compatibility SIM card supported
  • WiFi module to use your smartphone as hotspot for the connection
  • Internal GPS for Assisted A-GPS and Supported S-GPS modes
  • Audio Kit including microphone, speaker, hands free and headphones
  • SD file system up to 32GB

We have a 3D printer available for prototyping the casings.
Once the Navdiy goes in production, the casings fabrication will be outsourced to an external company for super quality casings.

Navdiy timeline and goals

As we are still a young startup, the first production will be limited to 175 pieces.
80 pieces will be reserved for our investors, and people who successfuly fulfill one of our many bounties (*see below).

Batch 1 is timed to be released by end of July 2015
The estimated selling price will be around ~135$ for batch 1.

If batch 1 becomes a successfull build, and enough funds is raised, we proceed to the mass production of batch 2.
Batch 2 should start selling commercialy around October 2015 and have multiple tweaks to it.

The batch 2 touchscreen size will be user selectable ranging from 3.2" up to 7"

Navdiy funding and spending

Navdiy will run funding campaings on btcjam and kickstarter. We are in the progress of having our accounts verified.
We are not looking for millions, but for a small budget to accomplish batch1 production.

Here is what we need, and how we plan on spending it;

  • 1000$ up: Mass purchase of the controller boards
  • 2500$ up: Mass purchase of the needed modules (gps, 3g, ...)
  • 4500$ up: Mass purchase of the displays for batch 1 (4.3")
  • 7000$ up: Creation of the casings using high quality products like aluminium inserts

If we succeed in completing the batch 1 production, multiple manufacters have agreed with us to mass produce batch 2.
Once the fundraising achieves it's goal of 15.000$, all excessive budget will go to campaign and promo.

Our funding campaing is also limited. We need 50 investors, who get the first Navdiy device in highest production priority.
The first 50 devices will have a special engraving on the casing saying "thanks to *the investor's selected name* ".

30 more devices are reserved for community bounties, after they are successfuly fulfilled.
These devices will have a special engraving with the username and the bountie they accomplished.

Navdiy community bounties

Since this is a community project, we want to involve the community around it.
Because we are a small startup, we seek help by returning our product as reward for every successfull bounty.

Here is what we need right now, this list will keep growing daily;

  • Logo creation and design, design of forum banner
  • 3D rendering and design of the casings
  • Translation and typo correction of the main topic (We are all dutch)
  • Website creation based on the community voted logo

Every bounty will be voted public using a poll on our website.
The winner of each bounty gets a free edition on the Navdiy batch 1 with special engraving on the casing.

Navdiy updates

This topic will be updated multiple times per day. Please watch this topic for changes.
If you like this project, or the concept behind it, share it as much as possible.

30/04: Update: Mileage reward system

We consider implenting a faucet style reward system.
For example, every 20 mile you drive you get BTC 0.0000001

Using GPS sensors, the system can detect every X mile the device has traveled at a minimum speed.
Then it broadcasts a signal to our servers, releasing X reward to the user's predefined wallet.

25/04: Added indiegogo campaign

Thank you for reading.

How does this contribute or relate to a Bitcoin Project?

Bitcoin will be our primary payment method for purchasing the Navdiy devices.
We also look for trendy implentations of Bitcoin on the device itself.

I'm not sure if there was something wrong with the page I loaded on my phone but there was no product video nor were there any pictures of the device. How can you expect to sell something without actually showing what it is?

That is exactly why we have bounties on our topic.
One of them is 3D rendering and design of the casings.

We need a solid 3D rendering of the final model.
If nobody claims the bounty by next week, we will hire a studio to do this work for us.

I'm gona watch this. I think there is a market. Where I live traffic is not an issue. But on recent visits to San Francisco and L.A. my friends there were all using waze. I had the same experience as you (OP). I had the GPS and waze and at one point needed google maps also.

4.3" touchscreen display is way too small!

I have a 10 inch tablet (no SIM card) with navigation software and a small DC/AC converter to recharge while driving. That makes a good system and I avoid expensive connection costs as I drive very often in countries without a local SIM card.

I used to be a citizen and a taxpayer. Those days are long gone.

Sorry but this is why you're getting no interest. This is called 'Spec' work, and no self respecting designer will do it. As the industry says... 'No ReSPECt'
You're asking for specialised skills and knowledge (renderings) yet not offering to pay them.... but 'they might win' something. The most you can hope for is a designer starting out who will do it for exposure.

As posted before, if nobody claims the bounty, we will hire a studio for the rendering.
It's not about no offering to pay, it's more about asking a community to help build this project together.

But your point has a good value, thank you for the input!

Good, I guess I just reacted too quickly after reading info on batch 1. Anyway, on a Volkswagen Golf (not an expensive car), you can get an 8" screen. So unless you want to sell your appliance to bikers, I can only recommend a large screen.

Depending on community input and gathered funds, we can always scale up to 11"
But to start out as a concept, the posted ranges will do just fine for batch 1

Thank you for your suggestion!
