I paid for some and gave them my receiving address... so sorry for my ignorance but will the bit coin automatically show up in my wallet? or do i need to do something? Thanks in advance
Bitcoin addresses contain a checksum, so it is very unlikely that mistyping an address will cause you to lose money.

The bitcoin will be in your address automatically when transaction get confirmed. Electrum will reflect that balance the next time you start it.

just leave your Electrum client open for a couple of minutes so that it can connect and download the block headers (sync up) and it will show you all your balances and transactions.

also you can always check your balance in an online block explorer. like www.blockchain.info
just put in your bitcoin address and you can check your balance.
