I woke up this morning to see this:

A Payment has been received into your bitcoin wallet.
Public Note: YOUR RETURN ON INVESTMENT FROM -> LIMITLESS-BTC.COM <- You will receive next payment in ...
It was only 0.0001BTC, besides I have never joined this site before.
Since I don't like dust in my account, is there anyway to prevent this from happening again?
In order to get the maximum amount of activity points possible, you just need to post once per day on average. Skipping days is OK as long as you maintain the average.

It's just spam ads, I saw they sent it to MZ's address too
https://blockchain.info/tx/fef292acc32e3ea8dba53c0793700101a703debb7f318781e426171d860301b0

I don't think you can prevent this will happen in the future as long as you have posted your address publicly.

This site is most probably a Ponzi/Scam site and they do this to advertise and lure people in. Some people actually end up thinking they will get something and invest in these.

You can't prevent it but think of it this way, you received a free Tx Fee for your next transaction.

I think just ignore it, don't attempt to try & investigate it.

I received 3 transactions totalling 7 satoshis into one of my addresses last year.
I just left it.

Besides if bitcoin grows in price x 100 it may buy you a pint one day Wink

I read somewhere before that it's a fishing attempt.
They send it to a random address & hope that you post on about it on here or reddit.
They can then link an address to a username here & maybe get your IP & sweep your coins.

Best thing to do is to just never mention it.

Mostly happen if you're join ponzi or you ever publish your address into this forum. There's no way it can happen if someone doesn't know your address.
Actually that ever happen to me for  a few days. But just ignore and it never sent again.

Be careful. Do NOT fall for scammy Ponzi Games. There are only a few honest Ponzi Games now where you are secured by design, e.g. Nine9.ninja or www.CrazyPonzi.com. Do NOT send your hard earned coins to other scammy sites without understanding their program in depth.

There are certain companies that flood the blockchain with a message, usually containing a website. This means they are advertising their website. The most famous case was the Laxotrade one, that was annoying.

there are no secured ponzi games, they are all a scam in the end, when they can't pay the last one, and stop advertising your site in disguise

They always find a way to get to all possible addresses. When the spam from Laxo Traded happened, I did exactly that. Next day I got the spam on newly generated addresses.

First of all, I am not advertising anything in disguise. The link in my sig is a referral and I am allowed to keep it there according to forum policy.

Now, there is a common conception that all Ponzi Games are scam. NO. Because Ponzi Games are NOT Ponzi Scheme. Just like murder games are not murdering. But, it is true, most of thr Ponzi Games are scam.

But, the 2 games I mentioned are way different than you think. They do not need the last person(s) to be robbed. The first person(s) may lose as well, if their deposit expires and then the last person(s) win. And if the operator tries to steal, he'll get a meager amount compared to what he is making from commission by running the game honestly. Hence, for his own sake he wont run away. I have played there myself.

Ooh another "victim" of advertising spam on the blockchain. Well it isn't a mysterious payment; it's just another attempt on advertising a service and getting you to visit the site that may or may not harm your computer. Whatever happens, don't click the link. Also, don't worry about the 0.0001. Smiley

Someone else on BCT had posted the exact same thing. I wouldn't go to that website as it is probably just a scam.

And if you have never joined before, then they must have found your address somewhere. I wonder where...

When this first started happening (the 'enjoy'/'sochi' tags were widely seen) it dawned on me that the method would be a convenient and low-cost way to put an unforgable tag on certain addresses.  Perhaps, say, those for whom the owner had taken the time to properly register with an authority of some sort.

Dunno about your tag, but the earlier ones would never confirm (and this never became part of the persistent blockchain because the offender was to cheap to include a fee.)  The message was, however, transmitted to all semi-functional nodes in the network, and anyone could rather easily maintain a record of all messages unconfirmed or not.  'Disk is cheap' after all.  If one was mandated as a function of holding a certain style of 'Bitcoin License' to retain a chosen set of messages it would be low overhead (since they can freely discard all others.)  This is how I would (if I were evil) design a reasonably low-overhead solution to gain some control over Bitcoin and, of course, save our children from ISIS and Putin and so forth.)

it is just spamming a scam Cheesy
you can think of 0.0001BTC as a fee payment which you can use later when you want to spend your bitcoin

Those payments are indeed mysterious. Because i don't post often my addresses to public i usually do not get them, only time it happened it was on this forum, and when address was posted thru Private Messages. It's weird, as i have full trust in people i give addresses not to post it anywhere and only use it for one time TX. Logical conclusion would be that some bot is parsing even thru PM's on this forum, but that would mean cooperation from administration.

Did anybody figure out how exactly "spammers" (they are not exactly spammers, let's call it more like GreyHat SEO, in the end You have more money:)) got their address? It's impossible for me they've got it from any public place. Just as little side note, gathering addresses from public internet it's really simple so be carefull what You exactly post on forums like this which are connected with YOUR money.

Block chain is a public ledger. You don't need to post your address anywhere to make it 'publicly visible'.

Spammers parse the block chain to gather addresses that have ever received any amount of Bitcoins (non-zero / active addresses).
If your address has ever received any incoming transaction, chances are spammers already have your address.

That's the problem when you post and made available your public address in open discussion. I don't think you can do anything at this point to stop the transaction, so the only way is to switch to a new address. Sometimes when you made a payment or request or accept payment, it will also mean giving away your address

You don't need to post your address publicly in order for spammers to obtain your address.
Remember CLAM coin initial distribution?  Anyone can parse the open block chain and retrieve a list of non-zero balance addresses and then send coins to them. In CLAM's case it was done for good cause to distribute clam coins to existing bitcoin holders. Spammers do it for spamming purpose.

Since I don't like dust in my account, is there anyway to prevent this from happening again?
it is just spamming a scam Cheesy
you can think of 0.0001BTC as a fee payment which you can use later when you want to spend your bitcoin

This is not a scam. This is just one of their method to advertise their site so it will attract people and hope many people want to play at their site. I guess this is not something that bother you since you got a free payment. May be it will cover your transaction fee for one time  Grin

It's just spam to get you to visit their website.
There is nothing you can do to prevent this shit from happening unfortunately.

these spam transactions are usually so small, for example 0.00010000 BTC if anyone wants to spend them he has to pay the fee which is more than what he gets Cheesy

Altough many people know that this kind of things is like a ponzi but I guess there are some people want to try this site. May be just to try it for once it will not regret it because the minimal is only 0.03 bitcoin so for some people losing 0.03 is not much  Grin
