Atlas,

I'm usually not a big fan of yours, but in this thread, you put out your idea in a clear, reasonable way, so much so that I was surprised to find myself agreeing with the questions in your OP.   We ended up getting a great response from gmaxwell that assuaged the concerns you raised.  This thread has been interesting and enlightening. 

Great thread.  Hope to see future posts from you at this high level of quality.
