Well, Bitcointalk speculation should have a rally thread. The old one is locked. (Go figure.) So... Here's a new one. I will fight one hundred bears with my bare hands if I must. I will keep this thread alive. This isn't about charts. This is about going to the moon! With Blackjack! And Hookers! In fact, forget the Moon. THIS IS BITCOIN!

Interesting, arch-neocon Sheldon Adelson and his casino conglomerate buddies ain't gonna like this one bit. Or, this pushes that whole crew into accepting bitcoin for bets and maybe even program their slots to give better odds to patrons betting in bitcoin.

"blockchain technology company" NEW YORK (Reuters) - Honduras, one of the poorest countries in the Americas, has agreed to use a Texas-based company to build a permanent and secure land title record system using the underlying technology behind bitcoin, a company official said late Thursday. Factom, a U.S. blockchain technology company based in Austin, Texas, will provide the service to the government of Honduras, the firm's president, Peter Kirby, said. The company is doing the project with Epigraph, a title software company that uses blockchain technology, also based in Austin. Factom would not reveal the cost of the project. Honduras would become only the second government to use blockchain, which increases transparency in a transaction, to manage government data, after reports that the Isle of Man would test a government-run blockchain project. yo REUTERS... Bitcoin is taking over the world, man. In the last three hours, we've seen: - Ban on Bitcoin websites overturned in Russia.
- Legalized Bitcoin gambling in US.
- Factom (i.e. Bitcoin blockchain) based LAND REGISTRY in Honduras.
Tally up the evidence. Time is running out fast, bears...

Do you really think the journalists know what the fuck are they talking about? Nonsense spreads fast when said by big newspapers. Its very simple. Who keeps the blockchain running? Miners. What reward do the miners get? Bitcoin, the native currency. Therefore, can the blockchain function without Bitcoin? NO, THE BLOCKCHAIN CANNOT WORK WITHOUT BITCOIN, SO THEREFORE EVERYONE USING THE BLOCKCHAIN IS INVESTING IN BITCOIN'S HEALTH.

Hey, at least we're not relentlessly going down. Price is stabilizing. So, supply and demand is close to finding equilibrium. The end of the downtrend is well and truly nigh. First, some boring stability. Then expansion. All the infrastructure is in place. Add just a little extra demand and we'll be taking off. Think upside. This is the time to get your risk on. Sell a kidney or two, remortgage your house for Bitcoin, etc. Long term, you'll lose out on something like $200... or gain something like $40000... PER BITCOIN. You do the risk/reward.

The product launch reflects 21’s view that “bitcoin will ultimately be seen as a fundamental system resource on par with CPU, bandwidth, hard drive space and RAM,” Mr. Srinivasan wrote. It’s a notion of “Bitcoin for convenience, not profit.”
amazing.

[...] Can someone explain to me (the non techy guy) how Nasdaq plans to play around using the blockchain without using bitcoin? Briefly, how does this work?
I am not even going to pretend to be a tech expert. I just enjoy investing and loitering in this forum.
Simple explanation: 1. Learn that Bitcoin is not the only coin using blockchain technollogy (see altcoints), just like AOL was not the only provider using TCP/IP (see other providers). 2. Understand that AOL is irrelevant to the internet now. 3. ? ? ? 4. Profit! Nice.

What makes you think that the existing financial system is not planning to replace SWIFT with their own coin which they will use amongst themselves to make transfers - reducing costs and rendering the international transfer bitcoin arguement irrelevant.

http://americasmarkets.usatoday.com/2015/05/19/nyse-launches-a-bitcoin-index/The whole situation is looking rather spring coloured today. Chart source is: www.btccharts.comIf this goes on, buyers will have to change from patiently placing limit orders below, to market bids. And what happens, when that happens? Demand is very close to catching up with today's relative abundance of supply. And the epoch of abundant supply is fast coming to an end. Tick tock. What did it take to buy Bitcoin in 2010 or 2011 or 2012? By 2011, millions had heard about it. Perhaps: Not looking at where we are, but where we're going.

Love the thread Elux. Just curious what your thoughts are on the meaning of Larry Summer's quote from the 21 blog post:
“The 21 chip adds a whole new dimension to bitcoin’s potential utility. At first we will be struck by the presence of a technology like embedded mining; eventually we may be struck by its absence.”

May 26, 2015 8:08 am | Nasdaq to step up blockchain trialsNasdaq, the US exchanges operator, this year plans to increase the number of trials with the decentralised network that underpins bitcoin. The New York group expects to debut three or four trials of the ledger in trade processing in the next 12 months, in a move that Bob Greifeld, the group’s chief executive, hopes could radically reshape some of the US’s sometimes cumbersome and slow-moving market plumbing. ... Blythe Masters, the former JPMorgan banker who helped develop the idea behind credit default swaps, has joined a group of trading executives setting up a venue that will convert buyers and sellers of financial assets into bitcoins, thus cutting settlement times. Visa Founder, former Citibank Chairman, and former Secretary of the Treasury join Xapo as AdvisorsDee Hock is the founder of Visa, and is responsible for effectively creating payment systems as we know them today. “Bitcoin represents not only the future of payments but also the future of governance,” Mr. Hock said. “We live in the 21st century but are still using command and control organizational structures from the 16th century. Bitcoin is one of the best examples of how a decentralized, peer-to-peer organization can solve problems that these dated organizations cannot. Like the Internet, Bitcoin is not owned or controlled by any one entity, so it presents incredible opportunities for new levels of efficiency and transparency in financial transactions.” John Reed was formerly the Chairman & CEO of Citibank, and was responsible for growing Citibank into the world’s first truly global financial franchise. Under Mr. Reed’s leadership Citibank developed the modern ATM and helped redefine the modern retail banking experience. “Financial services have remained largely untouched by the digital revolution,” says Mr. Reed. “Bitcoin represents a real opportunity for changing that. Money at its core is simply a ledger for keeping track of debts and Bitcoin is truly the best iteration of a universal ledger we’ve ever seen. The mere fact that there will never be more than 21 million bitcoins and that each bitcoin can be divided into 100 million units makes it a significant improvement on any historical form of currency.” Lawrence H. Summers was the Secretary of the Treasury under President Bill Clinton, and continues to be one of the leading economic and policy thinkers of our time. “Until now whenever we’ve needed to transfer money we’ve had to rely on a third party, whether it be a bank, a clearing house or a payment network. Bitcoin offers, for the first time, a method for transferring value and making payments from anywhere to anywhere, in real-time, without any intermediary. This could mean we soon see many billions of people sending bitcoin everyday as easily as they currently send a text message.” RALLY!!!!!!

If we knew that, exactly, price would be at like $20000 already. Investors and institutions are heavily discounting future price based on the "7tps limit". Bitcoin isn't ready for mainstream until that goes. But it's getting ready. OP, it's been almost Two WeeksTM... SoonTM?
Actually, not sure if it's going to be soon. No "Two weeks" guarantee implied. It will seem like a long time if you sit and stare at the price. This is a great time to be investing, less good for trading.

The issue now is when and how. I know, but if it is "too late", in my mind that is just an interesting experiment in how the fee market will react. Of course it could slow down the whole adaption, which is bad, but it can't stop the project, nor can it open a window for competition.

With the fee market based on transactions spent, whats consider a fair fee then? I dont believe the fee market concept will work.

Maybe not, at least not in the beginning (the market is people, so it depends on what they know and what they learn when it happens). As people have pointed out, it could be tragic at first. The trouble is that there will always be a limit in practice, so graceful degradation is necessary. When the 1 MB limit is extended, work is still needed to make sure that there is no chaos next time. You can not just extend the limit forever.

Yeah, but despite the growth, its all about them actually sticking around. Look at a fine case with BFL, that supposedly was a good company in the 1st year, then now went all bad.

I think this is the most likely scenario. I don't think it will just crash and burn or that it would go to the moon overnight. Steady climb with some bumps is what I expect

Bitlicense is here! No more uncertainty.Headlines are starting to tick in: New York regulator issues final bitcoin rules NEW YORK, JUNE 3 | BY KAREN FREIFELD AND GERTRUDE CHAVEZ-DREYFUSS
New York state issued on Wednesday its final rules for virtual currencies such as bitcoin, easing regulations on the type of companies that could apply for a license.
Benjamin Lawksy, superintendent of financial services for the state of New York, said the new digital currency rules known as the "BitLicense" will focus on overseeing financial intermediaries only. Lawsky made the remarks on Wednesday at the BITS Emerging Payments Forum in Washington.
"There is a basic bargain that when a financial company is entrusted with safeguarding customer funds and receives a license from the state to do so - it accepts the need for heightened regulatory scrutiny to help ensure that a consumer's money does not just disappear into a black hole," said Lawsky.
As a result, the new rules would not apply to software developers, individual users, customer loyalty programs and gift cards, currency miners, nor to merchants accepting it as a payment. (Reporting by Gertrude Chavez-Dreyfuss and Karen Freifeld; Editing by Chizu Nomiyama) Love it or hate it. I figure Lawsky just cracked the door open for Big Money.

Bitcoin will be in all media today/tomorrow and reason for it will not be some exchange hack!! If nothing else more people will hear about it Tens or hundreds of millions of people have heard about Bitcoin, right? But, most of these people have learned everything they know about Bitcoin from a news story. Or three. Specifically, most people who have heard of "Bitcoin" at all have heard about it in context of either: 1: Mt. Gox 2: Silk Road 3: Bubbles! Now... What happened today is: Bitcoin just went from "Monopoly money you can buy drugs with." To "regulated financial product" in the New York, the world's financial capital. This will legitimately surprise people. The media builds up and tears down. This gives them a new angle to work with. Salaried, non-neckbearded people will sit up in their chairs and take a second look. And (some of them) will discover the wonders of magical internet money.

Made the Wall Street Journal today, again: Money Isn’t Free, but Moving It Is Now Cheaper Payment startups disrupt traditional cash-transfer firms by offering nearly instantaneous, zero-cost services By CHRISTOPHER MIMS June 7, 2015 6:23 p.m. ET One day last year, at the height of the Ukrainian revolution, Mark Howard spotted something interesting on television. In the background, a protester was holding up a poster with an instantly recognizable logo: A “B” with two vertical bars, the symbol for the digital currency bitcoin. Mr. Howard is an American IT specialist and a self-described bitcoin enthusiast. He surmised that the poster’s QR code, which is a kind of square bar code, must contain the address of a bitcoin wallet belonging to the protesters. On a whim, he froze the frame, scanned the code with an app on his phone, and sent $10 worth of bitcoin to a country whose banks were paralyzed but whose protesters needed money to continue their fight. It happened instantly, and the total cost of the transaction was $0.02. If using unregulated cryptocurrency to crowd-fund foreign revolutions sounds like a quintessentially 21st-century edge case, here’s a thing you need to know: The same fundamental technologies that enabled Mr. Howard’s impromptu act of foreign aid are being used by hundreds of other companies, in many countries, to do something that has never happened in the history of money: Exchange it at any distance, nearly instantaneously and for near-zero transaction fees. We are just at the start of understanding what this will mean. The safe bet is that the easier it is to exchange money, the more of it will be exchanged, with obvious implications for economies that successfully integrate these technologies. World's First Cryptobond Has First BuyerPublished: June 8, 2015 8:00 a.m. ET Overstock.com CEO Makes Historic Purchase of a Digital Bond Issued on Bitcoin's Blockchain SALT LAKE CITY, Jun 08, 2015 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE via COMTEX) -- Overstock.com, Inc. OSTK, +2.27% announced its CEO Patrick M. Byrne today made the first purchase of the world's first cryptobond for $500,000. Working with other qualified institutional buyers, the company intends to sell a total of $25 million in digital bonds to trade on a cryptographically-protected distributed ledger – the same technology that underlies cryptocurrencies such as bitcoin. "It's not exactly Jonas Salk injecting himself with his polio vaccine, but I wanted to own the first cryptosecurity ever issued," stated Byrne. "I intend to demonstrate my belief not just in Overstock, but in the TØ.com platform that we built and, indeed, in the cryptorevolution itself." ... TØ.com is powered by the blockchain and the Open Assets protocol. Those who purchase cryptobonds through TØ.com will be able to track their ownership on the bitcoin blockchain. Trades on TØ.com securely settle same day, as opposed to the customary three day settlement on Wall Street (referred to as "T+3"). According to Byrne, issuing the TIGRcub bonds on the TØ.com platform proves that cryptotechnology can facilitate transparent and secure access to capital by emerging companies. ... http://www.marketwatch.com/story/worlds-first-cryptobond-has-first-buyer-2015-06-08 Overstock just opened up the bond market: The bond market (also debt market or credit market) is a financial market where participants can issue new debt, known as the primary market, or buy and sell debt securities, known as the secondary market. This is usually in the form of bonds, but it may include notes, bills, and so on.
Its primary goal is to provide long-term funding for public and private expenditures. The bond market has largely been dominated by the United States, which accounts for about 44% of the market.[1]
As of 2009, the size of the worldwide bond market (total debt outstanding) is an estimated at $82.2 trillion,[2] of which the size of the outstanding U.S. bond market debt was $31.2 trillion according to Bank for International Settlements (BIS), or alternatively $35.2 trillion as of Q2 2011 according to Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association (SIFMA).[2]
Nearly all of the average daily trading in the U.S. bond market takes place between broker-dealers and large institutions in a decentralized over-the-counter (OTC) market.[3] However, a small number of bonds, primarily corporate ones, are listed on exchanges. Today. Overstock opened up. The bond market. To Bitcoin.

why do you think something happened? just because the bitcoin is up a few bucks? it's just a wave of nothing that will vanish within a week. It could mean nothing, but then again, when the price is about to move upwards, the first steps are the hardest, since after a long period of stabile price also mean a lot of people selling as soon as the price goes up a bit, thinking they will be able to re-buy lower again. When they fail to do so and are forced to re-buy at a higher price than that what they sold for - thats when the rally begins. We have been waiting for price growth for such a long time that rarely anyone believes in it anymore, but it doesn't mean it wont happen. cheers

JoyStream: | A new BitTorrent client, with faster speeds, streaming and paid seeding. Proof of Concept Demonstration | Bitcoin micropayments for: Real time streaming over bittorrent / getting paid for providing bandwidth over bittorrent. Fast Downloads
JoyStream rewards seeders for providing bandwidth with micropayments, and this leads to much higher download speeds on all content.
More Content
JoyStream gives anyone with a full download a reason to stick arround and become a seeder, which radically improves content availability.
Streaming
JoyStream makes it possible to download and seek to any part of a large HD audio or video file by simply requesting and paying for it directly, which makes streaming work as well as on the web.
Paid Seeding
Anyone with spare bandwith can use JoyStream and earn BitCoin, at what ever price they choose, in exchange for seeding to peers. If you have some rare content which no one else has, you are rewarded by being able to charge higher prices
The brilliant insight of the BitTorrent system was to mobilize the idle upstream bandwidth of peers which had a mutual interest in acquiring the same content through barter tit-for-tat exchange. However, the problem of how to incentivize bandwidth contribution from peers which had no need for downloading, e.g. because they had completed the download - or because they had no interest, was a serious problem for the quality of the experience. People tried to work around this by organizing into private communities which imposed strict rules for minimial levels of bandwidth contribution, however access to and continued membership with such communities always remained too elusive and complicated for a lot of people. JoyStream attempts to solve this problem, with an open peer-to-peer solution in line with BitTorrent itself, by using the new money of the Internet, [Bitcoin].
This: - Fixes the incentives problem in Bittorrent.
- Makes private trackers obsolete.
- Incentivizes seeding hard to find content.
And maybe: - Gives a million teenagers Bitcoin denominated income.
If you felt a disturbance in the force just now, that was probably copyright holders screaming in terror.

The killer app? Yep. Monetize your surplus bandwidth! IMHO, first credible candidate for true mass market use of "the blockchain". You can use Joystream and get paid to seed, or you can use another client like μTorrent® to leech while suffering the pain of adware. Bitcoin assumes the role of background infrastructure for solving an existing incentives problem here.

It's amazing how all indicators are showing a clear UP and non stop long term rise, including VC money which keeps getting in and transaction volume keeps going up, yet you still see fud all over the place because people is too impatient to see it translated into the price

Sounds like you should look up the definition of pump and dump. We have stabilized at ~245. Chill here, then move up!

Can the Greek government quickly introduce capital controls to stop people withdrawing money from their banks? Also, if Greece goes bankrupt can it legally force bank customers to pay the debts of their banks with their savings? I know lots of countries were discussing a plan to pass bankrupt banks debts onto their customers rather than governments bailing them out.

so we have crushed the 250 barrier, now we need to hold that for a bit, before going up again, or only a crush will await us
the trick should be, to consolidate each step

If the money is in the bank then it's not legally yours anymore. You've given them back their debt notes. So for Greece (or anywhere else), I'd say they likely don't have to change any of their rules to use their customers efforts to support themselves.

Go Canada! Here's what the Canadian Senate just put in the Bitcoin blockchain: TEXT:"Senate Banking Committee calls for light touch approach to regulation of Satoshi's invention" DOCUMENT HASH:81b43c71e2eea227655bd2cf8aba38e18613825bd82332903b1655ead135243d proof of existence Corresponding to... DOCUMENTThe Senate Banking Committee's report on digital currency (background)I'm a Canadian Bitcoin professional. A little while ago Decentral, where I work, was approached by a Senate staffer for assistance in placing a short message and a "proof of existence" into the blockchain on the release of their report about digital currencies. My colleague and I were happy to provide them with technical help. Today both that report and the blockchain message + proof of existence have been publicly released and included in block #361625, as can be verified at the above links. (technical details)In order to minimise blockchain bloat both the message and the document hash were embedded using OP_RETURN so that full nodes do not have to store the UTXO's in their mempool, as they are forced to with, for example, the aptly-named cryptograffiti approach. The use of OP_RETURN also ensures that these outputs can be pruned from disk storage by non-archival nodes in the future. Due to the small size permitted in OP_RETURN the message was split across three different transactions. The document hash was embedded using the format from ProofOfExistence.com, though not through the site itself due to a need for clear association between the message and the document hash. To verify the proof of existence, download the file directly from the Senate link and hash it with the sha256 algorithm (for example using the "shasum" tool on linux). Compare the hexadecimal representation of the hash with the hexadecimal string located in the transaction at the "DOCUMENT HASH" link above (mouse over the "Proof of Existence" link on coinsecrets.org to see the hash). They should match! (in plain language)Mostly for fun, and partly as a nod to the community, the Canadian Senate has embedded the message "Senate Banking Committee calls for light touch approach to regulation of Satoshi's invention" as well as a short cryptographic "timestamp" that will prove to later viewers the document existed at this particular point in time and has not been changed since. (more about the report) As posted yesterday evening, this report is the one the Senate banking committee has been working on for quite some time, and in service of which Andreas Antonopoulos, along with many others, have testified before the committee. The conclusion reached by the committee seems to be a largely positive one, saying explicitly that the benefits of this technology outweigh the challenges it introduces and recommending a "light touch" in the regulatory department. Edit:Confirmation tweet from Senator Doug Black: https://twitter.com/DougBlackAB/status/611922954885165056 https://www.reddit.com/r/Bitcoin/comments/3aei7c/heres_what_the_canadian_senate_just_put_in_the/Glorious!

There was a fairly big dump the last time we got near 260 but the price is slowly starting to creep up again. The next time we get near 250 there should be less profit takers prepared to dump. That should make it much easier to break above it the next time.

Well... Greece just got goxxed. Banks are to remain closed "indefinitely" per the New York Times / Associate Press: ATHENS, Greece — Greece's five-year financial crisis took its most dramatic turn to date Sunday, with the prime minister announcing Greek banks would remain shut indefinitely and restrictions would be imposed on cash withdrawals. The decision came on the recommendation of the Bank of Greece, Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras said during a televised address to the nation. He didn't immediately say what types of capital controls would be imposed. ... http://www.nytimes.com/aponline/2015/06/28/world/europe/ap-eu-greece-bailout.htmlIf you had money in your greek bank account, good luck to you. Snowball effect? Puerto Rico’s Governor Says Island’s Debts Are ‘Not Payable’By MICHAEL CORKERY and MARY WILLIAMS WALSH | JUNE 28, 2015Puerto Rico’s governor, saying he needs to pull the island out of a “death spiral,” has concluded that the commonwealth cannot pay its roughly $72 billion in debts, an admission that will probably have wide-reaching financial repercussions. The governor, Alejandro García Padilla, and senior members of his staff said in an interview last week that they would probably seek significant concessions from as many as all of the island’s creditors, which could include deferring some debt payments for as long as five years or extending the timetable for repayment. “The debt is not payable,” Mr. García Padilla said. “There is no other option. I would love to have an easier option. This is not politics, this is math.” It is a startling admission from the governor of an island of 3.6 million people, which has piled on more municipal bond debt per capita than any American state. A broad restructuring by Puerto Rico sets the stage for an unprecedented test of the United States municipal bond market, which cities and states rely on to pay for their most basic needs, like road construction and public hospitals. That market has already been shaken by municipal bankruptcies in Detroit; Stockton, Calif.; and elsewhere, which undercut assumptions that local governments in the United States would always pay back their debt. Puerto Rico’s bonds have a face value roughly eight times that of Detroit’s bonds. Its call for debt relief on such a vast scale could raise borrowing costs for other local governments as investors become more wary of lending. Perhaps more important, much of Puerto Rico’s debt is widely held by individual investors on the United States mainland, in mutual funds or other investment accounts, and they may not be aware of it. Puerto Rico, as a commonwealth, does not have the option of bankruptcy. A default on its debts would most likely leave the island, its creditors and its residents in a legal and financial limbo that, like the debt crisis in Greece, could take years to sort out. ... I think you are not aware of the heavy resistances, bitcoin has to face in this price range. This is true. For example me personally, I have been busy shorting since 250. Srry you guys.

I am not a trader and all I do is look at the price. I held Bitcoin just before the 2013 pump and it flew up back then. Was there no resistance back then?
What resistance is there now and why? Why didn't btc struggle flying past $300 a year and a half ago? what's it going to take to go up?

Transfers are fine within Greece by the looks of things. http://www.theguardian.com/world/2015/jun/29/greek-debt-crisis-key-points-athens-bank-controlsYou can't send it out of the country. I wonder what the rules are about receiving. I'd go for a suitcase full of Euros myself. You'd need to budget for surgery after your hand had been bitten off.

Do you mean if a customer came in wanting to send euros out of the country that he couldn't because of the capital controls the banks have on sending money out of the country? Ok that makes a little sense.

They need some Hawala.
I guess we have the answer.
Q: What effect does Greece leaving the Euro have on bitcoin's value?
A: None
History may find your verdict extremely premature. This terrible situation validates the core concept of Bitcoin. Because, Bitcoin will not shut down on Monday. Bitcoin is money beyond the reach of politics. Money that cannot be censored or confiscated at will. An alternative that is always there, and just keeps going. Under adversarial conditions. Indeed, under any conditions. Come monday, all Greek banks will be closed. And Bitcoin will be open for business. On Monday, and every day, in Greece and everywhere, 24/7. So, it falls on Greeks citizens and Greek companies to make do with any one of three options. Cash, or barter, or Bitcoin. And almost all Greeks will choose cash and barter, but Bitcoin will be there. And when the world comes crashing down, Bitcoin is the better option. And so, the great deluge begins with a trickle.

248$ and increasing, we were at above 250 some day ago, i'm not satisfied at all, i'll begin to be excited when we touch 260-275 range at least people get happy just because the price went up a few bucks. that's sad. i get excited once we're over the $300 level. any movements below $300 aren't worth waiting for. Sad when other people are happy? Maybe you should talk to someone. you don't understand it. don't you think it's sad when people get extremely happy when the price goes up $2 ? or some people have low standards, also a possibility.

No, price rise is due to the force of accumulation built up since the high-volume January selloff. Whales had to fill their bags which keeps the price down and sentiment bearish. This happens at every market bottom where professional buyers and traders await. Weak hands expecting a turnaround either get shaken out on drops or eventually lose hope and let go. This coils the market like a spring as the bulk of available coin supply goes into relatively few wallets, resulting in fewer coins for sale.

well, last rally was also initiated by some finance crisis (on Cyprus if I remember correctly), so this seems to me more "real" than anytime before.

The price does seem like Bitcoin is seeing some sort of a mini rally. The $10 - $15 increase over the last two or three days has been a nice surprise. I am hoping the trend continues, or i at least hope Bitcoin continues to see upwards growth. No one knows for sure though.

The price of Bitcoin seems to be going up by a rate of $10 per day. If it continues holding that pattern then it will be over £300 in less than a week, and over £350 in less than two weeks. It's debatable if it will continue in that pattern but anything can happen now the Greek crisis has highlighted Bitcoin's main purpose of giving people control of their own money.

People often seem to forget about the significant Chinese numbers. That's where a lot of the action takes place though there are probably just as many westerners on there as locals.

It does seem like Bitcoin is having a very mini-rally. I hope it continues too, Bitcoin hasn't been at its $270 price level for a long while. I wonder if it will stay at these levels or if it will have another leg up or down in the coming days.

Apparently they prefer LTC. Or haven't you noticed what a real rally looks like? It's good I bought some LTC few years ago when they cost just 0.5$ per LTC. I still have some left and I will be dumping hard soon because I don't believe in LTC in the long term.

that's normal. nothing goes up all the time. people will take profits if they are up $10 per bitcoin, hoping that they can buy back cheaper. i still think we'll head back to $250 level.

The current pace is very good. It is exactly as I predicted. Slow but sure rise for the 5th week in a row. Next week we should start seeing the first signs of a parabolic rise on the weekly log chart.

Totally agree, meteoric rises based on nothing, no news etc aren't healthy for the long term acceptance & trust in BTC because they're always followed by the inevitable, guaranteed epic dump. The best thing is for the price trend to continue as it is, gradual upwards movement followed by periods of sideways, it gives us stability. We don't want BTC to be pump & dump. When the time comes for the BTC price to surge upwards relentlessly there will be a reason for it, it'll be justified. That time is not now.

what gonna happen when the Greece drama is over, would this new rally get cold and the bitcoin price back down to 240s? We need a global rally to at lease get 1 million to 10 million more people into bitcoin so things get back in the high lane.

Well that's a news every bitcoin owner will be happy with. With another speculation of China pumping bitcoin, the price will really go beyond $300 by the end of the month and hopefully we'll hit $1000 again by the end of the year.

cheers
248$ and increasing, we were at above 250 some day ago, i'm not satisfied at all, i'll begin to be excited when we touch 260-275 range at least people get happy just because the price went up a few bucks. that's sad. i get excited once we're over the $300 level. any movements below $300 aren't worth waiting for. Well you should be happy now, 310 barrier broken and going up without any signs of stopping

Well you should be happy now, 310 barrier broken and going up without any signs of stopping Some people only see what's in front of their nose. That's really dumb but thanks to them people like me can take most of the profit. I saw this coming ever since the weekly parabolic SAR flipped the side 5 weeks ago and that's what made me happy.

http://www.reuters.com/article/2015/07/16/eu-bitcoin-tax-idUSL5N0ZW3VF20150716Bitcoin should be exempt from VATCOPENHAGEN, JULY 16 Digital currencies like bitcoin should be exempt from value-added tax (VAT), the legal adviser to the European Union's highest court said on Thursday, in a case that could set a rule across the bloc. Sweden has asked the European Court of Justice to give it guidance on the tax status of bitcoin, to end legal uncertainty over the unit that is not backed or controlled by any government or central bank. The Luxembourg-based court, set up to make sure EU law is applied equally across member states, is still considering the application but often follows the advice of its advocates-general. The business of exchanging bitcoin for other currencies counted as a transaction which was exempt from duty under EU VAT regulations, Advocate General Juliane Kokott wrote in her opinion. Bitcoin-focused businesses welcomed her view, though the court has not said when it will reach a final decision. "It puts all bitcoin businesses onto solid legal grounds and recognizes bitcoin as a legitimate medium of payment," Tim Rehder, chief executive of London-based bitcoin marketplace Cubits, told Reuters. Sweden approached the court after David Hedqvist, a bitcoin web-forum moderator, asked for a ruling on the issue in Sweden because he wanted to start selling the digital currency. "We're happy that the advocate general shares our assessment and we hope that the EU court will share it as well," Hedqvist's lawyer Fredrik Berndt told Reuters. A few countries have brought in legislation covering bitcoin, but have taken different approaches. Australia has said transactions are liable to its goods and services tax, while Britain has made them exempt from VAT. (Reporting By Alexander Tange; Additional reporting by Jemima Kelly in London; Editing by Sabina Zawadzki and Andrew Heavens) http://www.reuters.com/article/2015/07/16/eu-bitcoin-tax-idUSL5N0ZW3VF20150716 This is huge. Mostly because the alternative would be disastrous, but still. RALLY!

If treating it as a currency, can you imagine if you converted between Euro and Dollar for a holiday or business trip and had to pay tax for the privilege of converting it to spend it?
If treating it as a commodity/Futures, what would the tax be compared to Wheat/Corn/Pork Bellies?
When I was a commodity trader in UK, my accountant told me I wouldn't be able to treat any losses as tax deductible, but profits would be taxable. Nice...(not).
Maybe there is an angle for them on income tax, but that would be the only one, and really I think they should back off a little there as well since it's not government issued notes.

I think I will proceed with my bitcoin business then VAT was the only reason it was pointless to do it earlier because no one would buy +20% bitcoins if they could get it cheaper from bitstamp (without VAT) for example.

WEll, it seems the Winklevoss brothers have been beaten once again because they executed their idea way too late, even tho they had the idea originally first. Let's see what they do now, maybe that ETF pushes their agenda to work harder and get theirs done soon to compete.

It depends. We don't know yet what the Gemini exchange exactly has to offer as they still have not launched. But it surely is a decent punch in the faces of the Winklevoss bro's. Only time will tell what kind of impact the ARK ETF has on the long term Bitcoin price.

Barry Silbert is so desperate to pump his GBTC which sees no volume.
It's not a bitcoin etf. It's a ETF that has invested roughly $35k (<0.5% portfolio) into GBTC.
But no one is gonna invest because they don't want exposure to the other investments ARK holds.

It's nice to see we finally breached through the $250 barrier today on Bitfinex. I hope we can manage to stay slightly above the $250 as I don't think we'll see the price advance further to $260 this week.

People who looked into bitcoin's price might consider looking again and maybe buying some too. Worst case is, if people bought high and it crashed down real hard.

REUTERS | Biting back: Bitcoin heads for best month in 1-1/2 yrs
By Jemima Kelly Oct 30 (Reuters) - Bitcoin has just recorded its best month since May 2014, stealing the spotlight away from the blockchain technology that underpins it and which has been attracting investment from almost every major bank in the world.
An investor in bitcoin at the start of October would have enjoyed a return of over 36 percent, dwarfing the return of about 2 percent that the dollar racked up for its holders. The web-based currency surged to its highest this year on Friday, hitting $334.05 on the Bitstamp exchange on its ninth successive day of gains, its best run in over two years. Bitcoin is used as a vehicle for moving money around the world quickly and anonymously via the web without the need for third-party verification. That has made it controversial, but also attractive, to users ranging from drug dealers to those trying to circumvent capital controls in Greece and China. Some bitcoin traders speculate that the latter might be partly responsible for the digital currency's latest surge. Most trading in the past month has come from Chinese bitcoin exchanges, according to Bitcoinity.org, though the accuracy of the Chinese exchanges' data is questioned. "At a time of central bank currency devaluations, direct and indirect, and with gold's directionless behaviour over the last two years ... bitcoin is increasingly viewed and marketed as a possible investable vehicle," said London-based trader Ashraf Laidi, who invests in both fiat currencies and bitcoin. Bitcoin is often dismissed as too volatile to invest in, having soared towards $1,200 in late 2013 before sliding to below $400 less than a month later, but it has stabilised this year. "What I'm happy about so far is that the price run-up hasn't been overly dramatic or disorganised," said Peter Smith, CEO of Blockchain, a bitcoin "wallet" or storage provider, which shares its name with the technology. EU RULING Last week the European Union's top court ruled that bitcoin should be treated like any other means of payment and therefore be exempt from value-added tax - a decision many in the industry say helped push up bitcoin's price. "It just makes bitcoin a lot more usable as a currency in Europe and also provides a lot of clarity to people who are speculating and trading in it," said Tom Robinson, co-founder of London-based bitcoin storage firm Elliptic. Another reason for the price surge might be that bitcoin supply is set to grow more slowly. The blockchain is secured by a network of computers that compete with each other to solve mathematical problems for a reward. That is currently 25 bitcoins every 10 minutes, but that will be halved to 12.5 bitcoins next year. In the same way that scaling back quantitative easing would prop up a traditional fiat currency, bitcoin could be boosted by the conventional economics of supply and demand. Although many say the technology behind bitcoin holds more potential than bitcoin itself and can function without it, bitcoiners argue that the blockchain supporting the currency is the only one to have been properly tested. An increased focus on the technology is helping prop up the price, they say. "The idea of blockchain and bitcoin are completely inseparable," said Michael Sonnenshein, a former JPMorgan banker who is now head of business development at Grayscale Investments, a New York-based bitcoin investment firm. "The blockchain is only as secure and as powerful as it is because there is this constant movement of tokens (bitcoins) on the blockchain." OCTOBER 11, 2015 TO—THE—MOON! Today is Sunday October 11. 2015. We have stabilized. The bottom is in. Here’s my prediction: The next great Bitcoin rally starts next week. (Tomorrow?) moon-transparent.png Fools judge before the evidence is in. The Winklevoss twins Gemini exchange launched on thursday. Thefacebook.png Without a hitch. And the first wires arrive in the coming week. Gemini will germinate a trickle, then a stream, then a relentless inflow. 2X gains (480 USD/BTC) before New Year’s Eve.
Sentiment will change. And when it does, it will change so hard and so fast, you will have some trouble believing it. The present accumulation window is closing. https://elux.svbtle.com/tothemoon2X target hit!

Gemini then "reversed" that trade."Trade reversal decisions are made fully at the discretion of Gemini management" - Gemini Since this is a New York State regulated exchange, if this cost you money you can complain to the New York State Department of Financial Services. See their rules.. Gemini doesn't necessarily get to do what they want. NASDAQ has explicit rules on trades far from the previous price. If an order is executed at more than 3% to 10% from the "reference price", it can be undone.

Thanks for that link. Pretty interesting to see these charts. However it's a pitty that they are in shown in local currencies. Most of these charts saw a massive growth with this year. Biggest exception is Japan. Reason still might be the Mt.Gox debacle. End it's great to see the growth in russia although the government is absolutely against BTC.

CNNMoney New York December 7, 2015: 6:09 PM ET
On Monday, China's central bank reported $3.4 trillion in foreign exchange reserves, the lowest level since early 2013. November was one of the biggest drops ever.
Many investors are trying to get at least some of their money out of the country. Many Chinese see better opportunities abroad, whether it's real estate in New York or London, pricey art, or stocks and bonds in other countries.
Exact data is hard to come by from China, but Capital Economics forecasts that November set a record for people moving money out of China -- so-called capital outflows.
"Today's data suggest that capital outflows picked up sharply last month," says Julian Evans-Pritchard, chief China economist for research firm Capital Economics.
All the evidence suggests that money has been flowing out of the country at a rapid pace since August when China stunned the world with a surprise devaluation of its currency, the yuan.
The Chinese government simply declared that all of a sudden, the yuan was worth less.
That caused a major selloff in the Chinese stock market and worries that China's economy is slowing down even more than the government is letting on.
When money leaves China, it means people are trading their yuan for dollars, euros and other currency. That makes the yuan fall even further in value.

I lost money in the rally earlier this year, and I'm sure I'll figure out a way to lose money in this one. It never fails.
