Yes - it's likely that the creators of alternate chains are doing so for profit. However, PPC is distinct in two points: 1) significant change in the algorithm 2) No premine (However, as pointed out, the way the algorithm is designed, early adopters have a significant advantage, thus pointing towards pump&dump)

PPCoin solves a problem which doesn't exist (yet):
By introducing proof of stake, it provides a mechanism to keep the security of the network high without spending a significant amount of energy. The only scenario where this would become a significant competitive advantage over bitcoin is when bitcoin is attacked by a major force who give a shit about the economy of mining. This can become a reality if a major player of the old economy wants to destroy bitcoin - in that case, the whole bitcoin community would have to mine at a loss, in order to keep their network operating...

Thus, right now I see PPC as a hedge for BTC, because the mining algorithm offers a different level of resilience to attacks on the network.

Well at least you're honest and admit that you're riding the waves as they come along Seems to be a rational strategy, as you exploit your early adopter advantage and cash out when it's safe. Your reaction indicates that you already cashed out of PPC and made some profit along the way. Hope you don't feel regrets that you could have cashed out HIGHER by cashing out later

Anyway ... on your comment regarding the bubble. I agree that the previous examples for alt coins were rather disappointing. That's why they didn't catch on. If you develop an alternative coin it should have DISTINCTIVE features. Proof of stake is something which has been discussed on the forum and may have some merit. That's why I expect it to be around for a while until it shows how well it can compete with other cryptocurrencies. If you're unsure about whether pure POW will lead to a collapse of bitcoin, then PPC now offers an alternative to hedge against that scenario. And if people like to hedge with 0.1% of their investment we're looking at a market cap of $100k right now, or in other terms, 0.001 BTC per PPC. (0.1 % * ~10M BTC vs. ~10 M PPC). Or even simpler: for each BTC hedge with one PPC.

ADDENDUM: I know that the PPC money supply is limited to about 100 fold of BTC. Thus you should rather take the max supply to hedge against: (0.1 % * ~20M BTC vs. ~2000 M PPC) which then amounts to 0.00001 BTC per PPC, or 100 PPC for each BTC at a 0.1% hedge.

Honestly I have not owned a single PPC. I wouldn't be surprised if there was a copy cat version of it in a month or two or three.

It's all an experiment...even bitcoin.

Coins that most people regard as "worthless" are actually really good candidates for game-currencies.

If these things can be picked up free or almost free players will likely find use for them; if they are so cheap that one faction of players can buy up most of the coins, they might well even skyrocket in value due to having an actual "backer", a clear faction that regards the coin as its own currency to be upheld over all the currencies all the other factions of players espouse/back...
