Bitcoin may be counted as investment itself because of technology behind it.
Also I don't suggest go other alt-coins. They will be all dead in sometime other than btc.

Yes and no Wink It is investment, but Bitcoin is first and in any moment can come Bitcoin 2.0 with better technology and with experience of Bitcoin 1.0 better prepered to conquer markets and break through the mainstream.. and then everyone will foget about Bitcoin and you can forget about your investment .. It is risky business.. and very risky investment..

But what if you are wrong, and bitcoin 1.0 will not die, but will become like retro car? In this case, invested funds will be significantly multiplied...

We cannot really know the future 100%. But in history, all first version will be renewed. And i dont know about BTC. I also not really believes BTC will just 21 millions in total.

At least, keep your mind open.

Of course we can't. But I can't see any reason to change the limit of total btc supply. It is not easy, because will require not only 51% of the mining power, but also a support by most nodes...

Buy Bitcoins with the extra fiat currency that you don't require and hold the BTC and sell it once it reaches a threshold.
Threshold is what you decide.
175% Return on Investment will be great.

Yup Alt coins are wasting investment. Putting investment in alt coins are like you itself digging land for your burial. so I would suggest Bitcoin for your future invesment Its sure Its worth for money. but not alt coins as you said.

I would not be so sure. Some Altcoin can be pulled by Bitcoin into the mainstream. The most likely are Litecoin and DASH, but for example porn industry can adopt sexcoin or eroticcoin (just an example) - it is very likely. So such investments may in the future prove to be the best.

The porn industry is already using Bitcoin. And it will continue using Bitcoin. There might be created kind of value tokens for sexual platforms which will interact with Bitcoin.
For other altcoins I'm not sure how things will work out. Litecoin can maybe make it.

bitcoin is already being used by plenty of industries. there is absolutely no need for any kind of altcoin. bitcoin is the best payment option for every market.

the mighty Bitcoin has now a very great potential top increase in value. just buy the coins themselves and hold them and wait for the next time till they rise. it might take a long time or short time but in the end I am confident that it shall pay. You just need to be patient a little bit

Bitcoin is a proper investment. All I can say that if you have the money, purchase as much coins as you can since they price of the coins is increasing from day to day. So when you hold on your coins for sometime, you can be able to resell them at a price much higher that the one you purchased. That is how people make money without much hustle. You however need to understand the metrics and challenges of bitcoins before making the purchase. This is just to help you be sure of the decision you are making.

so, what id like to do is invest bitcoins to a stock or mutual fund account, but am not sure the best way to go about it. any tips/advice?

There is one that I remember but they require a signifcant amount of capital the hedgable article from last year.

Hedgeable Offers 'Free Bitcoin to Every American' in Investor Promotion

The promotion is part of a multi-stage rollout of bitcoin services at the company, which has integrated its platform with bitcoin services provider Coinbase.

The company's Plus Program requires a minimum $25,000 investment, and associated fees can be paid with bitcoin. Bitcoin investments are currently not available with its $5,000 basic investment program.

Throughout the conversation, Kane stressed that, while its account may require a sizable upfront investment, its target market is average investors, those who have between $50,000–$200,000 to invest.

"The average client with us has $250,000, that's actually the average account size in America. However, if you have $200,000, you're really in the dark, most high-quality investment solutions are $250,000 and up," he said.

Otherwise you can wait for the Winkeveli ETF and then by some stock when it gets released on the Nasdaq in the future.

Investing bitcoin is good idea to make your bitcoin double or triple. Investing is a part of business that you buying the shares of company or many more. In investing bitcoin it need time to wait to gain enough bitcoin. There are lot of investment sites that can help you to get more income by using your bitcoin. I guess investing bitcoin will help all bitcoin use to double or triple there capital in investing.

There's no need to invest an alternative currency while you're saving on your online wallet. However the value of bitcoin will increase dramatically in marketplace.  It takes time yet it's worth the wait  for the growth of its currency. As a result,  it will be effortlessly  peaking on its own rate, but there is no assurance of stability so you need to be always be updated and should monitor the current price updates at bitcoin the market trend. Most of the investors were doing that as part of precautions, while investment of your bitcoin was still present in your wallet and that serves as your reference until such time you will decide whether sell or buy another holdings.

Some people want to hold for 5 years or more because it's easy and you don't need to do anything every day. You just keep the BTCs stored and come back when you want to sell it.

Lending, exchanging or any other activity demands time and big investors have too much work already to worry about this. It can be good, but you need to have free time to do lend, exchange, trade...

Why there's a need for you to look for a stock or mutual fund account? You can simply get into bitcoin and hold it for it is considered as investing already. And if you want a stock market like investment, you can just buy alt coins and choose those promising ones and has the potential to grow by that way, you are also doing the same thing like stocks.

I do agree with other guys too and I think it is more reasonable to buy and hold bitcoin, please keep in mind there is not any regulation about bitcoin and it makes mutual funding more complicated
Been planning to invest my bitcoin, but do not know yet all the systems it cycles. Right now i have been earning through some signature campaign because i don't have the the fund to buy one. And all i do is hoard my bitcoins and when the value gets higher taking the chance to convert it to my country's currency. Will think first about investing just gonna hoard it for now.

Historically, bitcoin has been performing well and the long term trend favors those who are willing to hold for a long time. This is a smart thing to do if you have money to invest and doesn't need that money in the near future. With the potential for a multi-fold growth by just holding and waiting, it can give better gains than other investment options.

Buying 5 bitcoins at this time should require at least $ 12k. If you understand the potential of bitcoin in the previous few years. Maybe you only need $ 1500 to buy 5 bitcoins and you're getting rich now lol

You do not have a time machine to see the previous year and all. Therefore, his point can be acceptable and we can buy bitcoins now and hold it some years. Even that you may reply like same bitcoin price will be moved to double or triple from the value you see now.

If you want to invest then just invest in bitcoins instead of stocks or mutual funds because it has a very low rate of return per year and it will need a lot of years like minimum of 20 years before you can say that you really make a lot of money from it while in bitcoin you can earn the possible income from those investment in just at least 3 years of holding bitcoin which is a lot way better.
