Even Satoshi can't be aware about every 0-day around.

Yeah but you gotta hand it to him. His pretty good with OPSEC since he hasn't been doxxed yet.

Once a transaction has 6 confirmations, it is extremely unlikely that an attacker without at least 50% of the network's computation power would be able to reverse it.

My feelings captured succinctly in this statement to the court by one Eugene V. Debs:

"Your Honor, years ago I recognized my kinship with all living beings, and I made up my mind that I was not one bit better than the meanest on earth. I said then, and I say now, that while there is a lower class, I am in it, and while there is a criminal element I am of it, and while there is a soul in prison, I am not free."

Honestly though, I'm not selfless enough to serve a prison sentence like that for the sake of my family or anyone else. I don't know about Ross, but I've already experienced more than my fair share of suffering. Kudos to Ross if he can ride it out, but if I was him I'd find some way to kill myself rather than exist as walking dead in prison conditions. To be fair though, the thought of even one year in prison makes me feel that way, public school indoctrination alone was almost enough to drive me mad. Remember kids, there is nothing to fear in death. Only suffering is worth being afraid of.

Yours in compassion and solidarity,

World Citizen Beliathon

Public school was not that bad. But I wouldnt want to spend a day in prison let alone years let alone life. I couldn't do it. I mean he was pretty young and everyone does stupid things when they were young so this sentence is rediculous. He was just trying to make money. When you think of people starting wars filled with death it's rediculous.

I think it will certainly deter some people from thinking about starting a darknet market, but for most it wont stop them and there will always be people willing to take the risk.

It will deter some people from starting a darknet market and publishing their personal gmail account in relation to it.
Lol, yeah that was one stupid mistake.
But still, to get life in prison for a crime like that is pretty abhorrent in my opinion.

The FBI made an example out of him. And also, it should be remembered that the judge (Kathleen Forrest) gave him a sentence which was even harsher than the one which was requested by the prosecution. And immediately afterwards, Kathleen Forrest began prosecuting people who commented against her on a blog site, regarding the sentence given to Ross.

He made quite a few stupid mistakes, but that was one of the biggest and ultimately lead to his downfall. I agree the sentence was harsh but that's America for you.

True, but I don't think it's the difficult to protect yourself especially if you set out to do so straight from the beginning. Use fresh emails, usernames etcs and don't use your own internet connection. Get a wireless dongle and pay for it with cash and even if you're compromised somehow there's not much to be found.

OPSEC is also depending on WHO is looking for you. Hiding from some random hackers is easier than hiding from the NSA.

How can she prosecute someone for commenting?
On what charge?

Do you have a source to that?

Ross William Ulbricht, legendary creator of the original darknet market The Silk Road, has been sentenced today in federal prison to Life in Prison.

Can he appeal to the higher court ?

There will definitely be appeals.

The sentence is so harsh, because they want to make an example out of him. Only the government can sell drugs and murder people that cause problems.

Life in Prison as to being worse than death, it really depends on his mind set. On one hand, he's still alive, but not free. After a term of institutionalization, it becomes an everyday way of life

I'm sure you could get used to the routine after a while.

Wake up and eat then suck a few cocks.

Be bored your cage for a few hours.

Have lunch then suck a few cocks with a side of ass rape.

Go to the yard for a while and get the shit beat out of you then suck a few cocks.

Be bored in your cage a few hours.

Eat dinner then get raped in the shower.

Be bored in your cage for a few hours.

Cry yourself to sleep bleeding and sore.

Dream about killing yourself.

How is that any different than having to read bitcointalk?

CNN did a quite sympathic cover on this with his family making the basic point that the punishment outweighed any personal involvement he had in the trade.    Im not sure how guilty he is but I'd guess 10 to 15 years as a normal punitive sentence.   No violence was involved by him I believe, bank robbers with shotguns fired would get like 20 ?

He is basically a victim of a over developed government with no limitations on its spending or accountability to its actions it seems.  His best hope is the government goes broke or defaults and a radical change to the current big gov thinking comes about.   No localised system of justice would require someone like him to die after decades in prison, he is a political pawn.

USA is not isolated in this kind of thing, I believe its relatable news that a citizen was fined for photographing a police car and complaining on facebook about their parking.  This is considered a crime of citizen persecution of government or some weird thinking.  My take, Ulbricht upset the gods and they are wrathful lol  his appeal is not likely to succeed in mitigating that effect but if they even cut it to 40 years that'd be something

https://www.fbi.gov/baltimore/press-releases/2009/ba121109a.htm

Im no way trying to defend him, I think he was an idiot but his sentence is more to do with the system then him personally

I don't disagree that the war on drugs is stupid and utterly futile, but Ross is still a criminal in the eyes of the law with money laundering and facilitating the sale of drugs etc

That may be true but lots of people are criminals in the eyes of the law but that doesn't mean the laws aren't wrong and they should be changed. Why can American presidents get away with war crimes and murder but nothing happens to them?

If he was such a genius he wouldn't be sitting in a jail cell right now. I admire what he did to some extent, but not his stupidity. He did a lot for bitcoin though and that shouldn't be forgotten but I think the whole thing went to his head.

Life in prison without the possibility of parole... Meanwhile cops are murdering our citizens at an alarming rate and not even being charged. The United States of America, Sad to say this is my country.

The state will always be on the side of employees of the executive branch.
