Thanks for the reply but that doesnt work either
I did that...it doesnt seem to work

I put in %APPDATA%  and there is no Bitcoin folder

See screencast

http://www.screencast.com/users/kirwin2009/folders/Default/media/e29aec26-8526-4897-a819-89b443a650ca

This back up was made using Bitcoin Core on a Mac.  I have been unable to open Bitcoin core on my mac  Error is "Bitcoin has closed unexpectadly"  I have done everything  (See past posts)  I have now installed BitCore on Windows computer.  So I am trying to open a wallet.dat file made on a mac on a windows platform.  I cannot see the bitcoin folder...I have gone into my settings and made sure folders are not hidden.   I cannot import the wallet into blockchain.info and I cant get bitcoin core to recognize it either....SEE LAST POST

Thanks

-snip-
I put in %APPDATA%  and there is no Bitcoin folder

-snip-
Have you by any chance met this screen[1] and changed the location?

Alternatively, try opening command prompt, use
Code:
cd [BITCOIN-QT LOCATION HERE] -datadir=[Insert NEWLOCATIONHERE]
. Replace Bitcoin-qt location here with the place you installed it to eg. C:\Program Files \Bitcoin\bitcoin-qt.exe and create a new folder anywhere on the computer and replace NEWLOCATIONHERE with the directory to the new folder. Open Bitcoin Core and shut it down. Next go to the newlocation and replace the wallet.dat inside with your backup and try my commands again.

Are you checking the C drive in addition to the F drive?  The Windows screenshot only shows F.

You can make some new wallet (with some program you like, for example on blockchain.info, or in MultiBit or elsewhere) and get new bitcoin address. Then find some friend you trust who has Windows with working Bitcoin Core, bring your wallet.dat to him (or all your multiple wallet.dat files if you have more backups). And try to access your old funds there (backup his wallet.dat, replace it with your backup, start his Bicoin Core, let it synchronice), then sending all BTC to your new address.
5 BTC is quite a lot of money it would be sad to lose it.

Yeah, i'd recommend electrum or blockchain.info. Bitcoin Core has syncing problems, which cause massive panic to the user, although it is all-round pretty safe.

I use coinbase because I never have more than two hundred in my coinbase account at any one time. Even then, I spread the coins across multiple accounts, so I'm safe Cheesy

looking for a signature campaign, dm me for that

Bitcoins wallets although say about maintaining protection. But, still experienced hackers can do something anywhere. If you're seeing pending or unconfirmed transaction. It means someone has sent bitcoins from your wallet to his own wallet and transaction is in confirmation process. If it confirms your wallet balance is gone. If it doesn't confirm by God's grace, it will stay there. You can't do anything here. Lost bitcoins are like stolen money.
The precautions always remain the same. But somethings happen no matter what you do. To protect your remaining coins, be cautious and keep your private keys . If you have multiple devices, you can keep your private key safe. So, even if you lose coins. You will lose very less.

I am still getting no where.  Your help is so appreciated.  Im assuming you can just read back through my thread so I dont need to restate my eternal saga.  WHere it stands now is

Run
http://www.screencast.com/users/kirwin2009/folders/Default/media/82a83dad-d7f6-46a8-b2dd-6e081299bfa8

Error
http://www.screencast.com/users/kirwin2009/folders/Default/media/8ff4b585-89c9-4054-b299-1de2f55f30cb

I cannot open a backup of 5 bitcoins on a different computer. Old computer is toast.   Backup shopuld be good.  It was created from Bitcoin Core and I have a password....thats it.  My last instructions was to  go to the run dialog and put in    %appdata%/Bitcoin

Unfortunatly....when I do this I get the error message as show above.  Any suggestions as to why this Bitcoin folder is not showing up on my Windows computer.  I have Bitcoin core updated and running at the time

Thanks again

Well, the first one says there is no such directory as C:\Users\New

What is the name of the user you are using?

You can find it like this according to this depending on windows:

Quote
Follow these steps to find out what "User" name you are currently logged in under, on your laptop:
Press the Ctrl + Alt + Delete keys simultaneously.
Windows Task Manager will pop up on the screen (see picture below): Click on the Users tab. Look under the User heading for your currently logged in account.

That would be because the folder doesn't exist. Open the file explorer and in the bar on top type %appadata% then hit enter. In the folder it takes you to, there should be a folder named Bitcoin. If it isn't there, create the folder. Make sure you use a capital B. If the folder is there, open it. Once in the folder, copy the wallet.dat file there and then start Bitcoin Core.

OK...I did as you suggested..

http://www.screencast.com/users/kirwin2009/folders/Default/media/a7e972e6-56cc-43cd-a4c8-8a8a4941ba74

I created the Bitcoin folder and moved the wallet.dat backup file to that folder.

However...when I look in the program I do not see them any where in Bitcoin Core . I tried closing the program and opening it several times.  I looked at several youtube videos on restoring a backup and I didnt see anything else to do

How do I access the coins

Here is a screen shot of Bitcoin Core opened up with the wallet.dat file in the Bitcoin diredtory.  How do I get them to show up

http://www.screencast.com/users/kirwin2009/folders/Default/media/39825d27-b5b1-4cc0-ba35-6c3a134b90fe

NOTE:  This backup was made on a Mac and I am now opening them on a windows computer....does that matter?

Thanks

Oh. I think I see the problem now. Earlier I assumed you hadn't run Bitcoin Core yet so the data directory wasn't created. However that does not appear to be the case. You need to put the wallet.dat file in the data directory, which by default should be in %Appdata%/Bitcoin unless you changed it. If you don't know where it is, just search in the file explorer for "Bitcoin" You should find a folder with a few other folders within it. It should have "blocks" and "chainstate" folder as well as a wallet.dat file and a debug.log file. If you find that folder, replace the wallet.dat in their with your own.
