I've looked into starting a private security company just so i can conceal carry in california. When i'm in arizona I have like 3 handguns in my car lol.

If I transport my Assault Weapons in California, I have to carry around my paperwork from the DOJ saying hey i'm legal, and it can only be to certain area's/events.

It wasn't one of the available choices, but most geeky stuff in Southland happens in West LA (Santa Monica, Culver City, Marina del Rey)

That is some funny shit, two votes for each one except two which got zeros.  That is funny.

I am cool with coming down to San Diego or OC and even LA but I would need a two day heads up with an address.  If we did meet in San Bernardino I could recommend some places but really not as good as what is in OC or San Diego.

As for the security business cool idea but wow packing some heat my man or what.  I love my guns but wow.

I have never been to New York or Chicago but I would like to think that those cities are better then LA and not like it.  If so then really no reason for me to go I guess Sad.  OC is good for me.

+1 vote for Los Angeles.  All the liberals, crime and crappy gun laws exemplify how badly bitcoin is needed here.  Grin

I also plan on attending Libertopia, however, and am open to meeting in SD during that weekend.

Really? San Bernadino, CA - 4 votes!?
... are you guys starting your own Bincoin economy over there or what  Shocked

I'm somewhat undecided on what to vote...
Technically, I can go to any of these places, but not sure which would be better...
I do like to just visit SD for the hell of it, so wouldn't mind tagging to their meet.

BTW, what is plan for that meet?
What are we going to do?
How long will it take?
How much vodka should I bring?  Grin

Ah ha the evil empire is winning  Grin.  All this tells me is that us folks in San Bernardino are so hard up looking for a way out that those who have figured out bitcoin are mining the shit out of it so we can get the hell up out of here Smiley.  That and you all in the nicer places to live are just enjoying the good life so much that bitcoins are not a major focus because the beach life is oh so good. Tongue

Well it is nice to see that San Bernardino has the most and happy to help put something together but I would be just as happy going to OC or San Diego.  I am not a fan of LA just because of traffic.

Why don't we try to offer specific locations to meet and we can work the date and time from the one or two top options?

I will go first= Yard House 12473 North Mainstreet, Rancho Cucamonga, CA  MAP: http://maps.google.com/maps?q=12473+North+Mainstreet,+Rancho+Cucamonga,+CA&hl=en&sll=34.094715,-117.579846&sspn=0.16561,0.239639&t=h&gl=us&hnear=12473+N+Main+St,+Rancho+Cucamonga,+California+91739&z=17

Just offering an idea, open to any other ideas we have  Grin

Cool, I am sure others will see then and let us know.  For now lets offer the following ideas for days and times with this local:

1. October the 3rd at 6:30 pm Wednesday
2. October the 7th at 4:00 pm Sunday
3. October the 8th at 6:30 pm Monday

So these are some idea dates and times that I know I can support but I also know some of you can do weekdays easier then weekends, that is why I put up the dates and times the way I did.  Now if you like the location (by the way it is at a major shopping mall with a bunch of other places so we are not stuck if it is not what the majority wants) but the times listed are not great then offer something else you think might work for most of us to attend.  If we can get this figured out by say this Saturday then I can call down and lock in an area where we can all sit and talk and those that can make it do and those that don't can make the next one.  This location has many highways coming in and or around so getting in and out should be easy for most.

Lets see if we can make a meeting happen  Grin

Don't know, I don't think there has been a So Cal meet but someone correct me if I am wrong.  I would expect at this meet up that we could talk about what we think is going on with BTC, see if there are ops to work together on stuff, share idea or at worst have a beer and share war stories.

So I say that if we want to meet up this weekend lets just lock in October 7th at 4pm in Rancho Cucamonga.  Once I know what IIRC is I will contact either them or Yard House for a reservation so that we can get a spot.  Sounds like people would be ok with outside so I will get a spot outside so we can drink, watch football on the tv and talk.  Between now and Thursday if you want and think you can come to Rancho Cucamonga that afternoon let us know here on the form and that way we can see see what we get.

Now I am just trying to get this set up, once we are there basically we need to bring our topics that we want to talk about and go from there so nothing formal.  Anyone who wants to take the lead there can I am just want to see if we can do this and then see what we can talk about.  So with that said expect to be there an hour or so for drinks, food and anything else.

Hell I will sweeten the pot, I will buy an appetizer for the group, see now you have to show up Smiley

I use BitcoinSpinner.

Do any of you guys use GPG/PGP? We could sign each others' keys while we're there too.

I say we still do it and I am going to lock in the local.  There is no reason why we can't do one in November as well and advertise it.  I was just trying to put a pin in it so we can try to work from something.  Happy to come to another meetup in November too if it works with my schedule.

BitcoinSpinner is a simple chainless wallet app. I still have my own private key, but a server relays my transactions for me. In my opinion it's a good middle ground between security/usability/battery. When I had a full client on my phone I'd be all like "This bitcoin thing is awesome. Just download the app, and in a million hours I'll eventually be able to send you some. Oops my phone just died." Now my two minute pitch involves free money right then and there, no waiting.

GPG is an encryption tool, useful for signing/verifying messages. I kinda just mess around with encryption software for fun, but some people have "key signing parties" where everyone shares copies of their key fingerprint. Once you've verified each others' keys, you will always be able to communicate securely with those people, or the people they've shared keys with, and so on. If you meet in person, you can more highly rate how much you trust the key, which strengthens the "web of trust".

GPG is kinda tangential to bitcoin, but I think of it more as part of a greater free software movement anyways.

Oh you don't need to pay me to come to San Diego but I can't make the drive on the 7th Sad.  I and or we could meet at the conference the following weekend that is going on.  I do allot of meeting/planing for my work and trying to get everyone to meet is hard so if you down for it set up a San Diego time and place and I will try to make it as I am sure others will as well.

Grin,  So are you calling us easy Grin

Stephen is a major contributor (I think the webmaster as well but please tell me if I am wrong Stephen) for the Libertopia 2012 - San Diego - Oct. 11-14, 2012.  There is going to be bitcoin talks at the conference and tickets are 250 online and 300 at the door.  I am sure Stephen can tell us more but that could be both something to attend and also meet up at on the weekend.  I have a work commitment so I can't go to most of the conference and probably won't by a ticket due to lack of funds but if we want to meet up in San Diego with some other Bitcoin folks might be a spot of a second meet up?

Stephen if you want to tell us more it might get people interested in going.  Your post turned me on to the conference and the conference has some interesting info.  https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=109389.0

So just to confirm that Sunday at 4pm the Yard house in Rancho Cucamonga with outside seating so come one come all.  I will get an area that is out of the way outside where we can chill and talk.  I think with the recent developments of ASIC, BFL, GLBSE and other items I will be looking forward to talking about what people think.

For those who can't make it please toss up another date and location and lets see if we can keep this going,

So to follow up, yes there was a meeting and it counts because not one, or two but THREE people showed up Ahhha.

RandomQ, Explodicle, and myself had a few beers, enjoyed an appetizer and talked for a few hours.  I won't speak for the others but I enjoyed the time spent, we learned about what everyone is doing, how I was the oldest  Sad and I think had a good time.

So now that we know there is a San Diego meetup group and there are more folks who want to meet, someone else can recommend the next location and time.  I would rather participate then organize but happy to help.

420, I can't be down at the first few days of  libertopia but if you hold something on the weekend in the late afternoon I would consider driving down.  Hell, I will offer car pool too since I would not be staying the
night if that will help people, but you all have to meet me in the IE if you want to catch a ride Smiley.

I got there a few minutes late myself.  I was scanning the panel as I only recognized a couple faces.   Ends up FellowTraveler was up there I guess, I didn't even know it and missed the chance to meet him after.

The questions asked were the type of typical questions facing Bitcoin, economic (deflationary spiral), technical, practical (trade), etc.   The guests in attendance were libertarians and goldbugs.  @SilverVigilante pretty much had the best response basically by saying he supports bitcoin not just for its attributes (low cost transfer, non-reversible, etc.) but for what it is not -- it is not the Federal Reserve.  It is not the Goldman Sack nor it is the JP Morgue.   It is not helping to finance the wars.

I seriously think the faster you get someone using bitcoins on a smartphone (e.g., playing bitZino, or a BitcoinSpinner wallet,) and a tiny sample of coins so they are using them, sending them back and forth you then get the message through ten times better than explaining the chicken and egg merchant / consumer catch-22.

I'm thinking a bar crawl approach would be great to try.

Find an entertainment district (i.e., multiple restaurants / bars close together).  In the group, one person acts as the exchange.  So the order is taken, people pay the exchanger in bitcoins (e.g, via mobile, or some paper bitcoins even) and the exchanger pays cash to the bar.   Bring some tablet mobiles and [at locations where wi-fi is available] play bitZino, KingCo.in or SatoshiDICE to help show the server / bartender / bar owner one way that some people come into having a bunch of bitcoins they would like to spend on food and drinks.

Maybe spending a half hour at each stop the crawl could hit about five places in a few hours.  Updates would be made via Twitter or e-mail or something so that late arrivals would know where to meet.

I would love to do a bar crawl! Friday/Saturday are a must for me as well. I'm located in downtown LA but would be ok with driving - somewhere near a bus/rail stop would be preferable since then I wouldn't need a DD.

I can't do March 1-3, I'm going to a prediction market workshop. (Btw, if you're interested there might still be spots)

Heh, did more than just follow.  Great idea!

Re: A Bitcoin Fountain (Burbank, CA) - -> BTC for the taking!
Grab the coin and have a nice day!

This weekend is SCALE 11X (So CAlifornia Linux Expo).  I'm not able to attend this year's conference but last year I attended and in addition to having some great conversations with sysadmins, developers and others in the open source community I gained a healthy fear of relying on the cloud for services in which complete control over security is necessary (something which played out months later with the hacks at Linode (where funds were stolen from Bitcoinica, Slush and Bitcoin Faucet wallets) and Rackspace (where even more funds were stolen from a Bitcoinica wallet).

But if others from this list are attending it might make for a good impromptu Bitcoin meetup.

I live in Murrieta.  I didn't know where that was before we moved here, so ... it's near Temecula.  Wine Country.  Halfway between SD and Riverside.

I'm good friends with Tom Garrett who started the Society of Libertarian Entrepreneurs.  I'm the webmaster for voluntaryist.com.  The Dollar Vigilante says that I am their guy for programming tasks.  I still have free time, though, so if anyone wants to get together for lunch or ask me to take a look at their website, let me know.

I just put memeracing.net into alpha testing with an offer of 10% interest (paid on a loss of up to 1 bitcoin) to try to get people to play with it for testing.

Nice to meet other Southern Californians with some backbone and wits.

Dave.

have you been interviewed before?
Sure.  I'm pretty old.  Lots of job interviews.  My kids interview me every now and then.  I'm independent now (jobless/self-employed/free/whatever), but I still talk to potential clients on the phone every now and then.

And I'm not smart enough to tell if you're just poking fun at me because my post kind of reads like a resume cover letter.  Made me smile either way :-).

I'm tracking meetups at https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=155600.0

Of course, this is the "Where to meet?" thread, though the poll is closed.

I'm pretty sure there are a lot more SoCal bitcoiners than there are contributors to this thread, so I'm glad you joined it.

You might be interested in the Society of Libertarian Enterpreneurs, which is meeting in three days.  They aren't bitcoiners per se - some are familiar and some aren't.

There will be at least two Bitcoiners meeting (myself being one of them) in Cerritos this afternoon (Saturday March 23, 2013).

Details for the afternoon event:

a meetup for Saturday March 23

place 11305 183 Street
90703 Cerritos  http://www.josephinesbistroandbar.com

time 3:00 pm

[Update: There had been the desire expressed for an evening event as well. Notice was too short to try to plan one for today (Saturday March 23) but suggestions for an April date and location might help cause that to happen.  A location with Wi-Fi would be preferred.

I'm bringing a Wi-Fi enabled tablet too.  Then bitZino slots or something to let the server try to juice up the tip a little.

Looks like there will be a few attending:

5  [so far]

I have reserved a table under Jose

I made a new topic for anyone close to Murrieta: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=164102.0.  I work from home whenever I want, so I can show up with very little notice.

Incidentally, the Orange County Register today had a full page in the Business section for Bitcoin:

NO date, man?

I just read it.  It was today's paper (April 12th, 2013).

It included the one-paragraph masthead teaser on the front page of the business section.  Then the entire page 8 was devoted to Bitcoin.  (Incidentally, page 9 was a large article about the dangers of mobile payments and had a picture of a merchant's Square register setup.)

There were a few articles on the page.  One was an interview of Casascius.  The top of the page had a "What is a bitcoin" infographic.  Another article titled "Bitcoin Economics" was a primer on teh evil deflations and why Bitcoin will never work (I'm paraphrasing roughly what the article said).   The main article was this:

Bitcoin bursts: Hacker currency gets wild ride
