If the only things you were allowed were paper and pencil, say you were creating bitcoin in the 15th century, how would you do it? I ask because I'm trying to get a better understanding of how bitcoin works, and i think this would help a lot.

First of all, this won't happen.

See http://www.righto.com/2014/09/mining-bitcoin-with-pencil-and-paper.html and https://reddit.com/r/Bitcoin/comments/2s2w1r/generate_addresses_private_keys_with_pencil_paper/.

P.S. You can't mine with paper and pencil and you can create address with paper and pencil but it's little hard.

You will like this video. That is all that happens in the hashings but tons of times per second, which is what makes BTC so secure.

You can mine Bitcoins with paper and pencils, but Your hash rate will be measured in seconds / hash, not hashes / second. Tongue

I found the wikipedia article to be very helpful.  Also check out different forums and read lots of posts to get a good idea of bitcoins, not just the technical stuff but the social things as well.

check this out:
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=919430.msg10101533#msg10101533

but i think it is a terrible idea because humans will make mistakes in calculations all the time and it is a really long and time consuming activity while there are many other safe ways to create a secure address.
