The network tries to produce one block per 10 minutes. It does this by automatically adjusting how difficult it is to produce blocks.

There are several ways. Do you have a computer you can use that remains offline? Electrum or Bitcoin Armory are safe options that allow you to store the BTC offline or on an online computer (to spend them). If you want to be completely safe. Go to https://www.bitaddress.org/ save that page on a flash drive and create a random wallet on an offline computer (boot via live CD). Then write down the private key (don't store them where they may be exposed to the internet)

Isnt bitcoin qt more secure than armoy??
Not really IMO. There are some nice features in Armory such as GPU-resistant wallet encryption and m-of-n wallet which make it more secure.

Keep the wallet in your old notebook then print the private key. You don't use your old computer it seems, and the coins are safe so far.
