I use a NVidea 260 for gaming, but  want to do some mining too.

I have a spare graphics slot (used to run 2 x 260 in SLI).

Could I install a Radeon HD 6970 and use that for mining in the same machine?

no I don't think you can - things get confused [well in windows anyway]

In the Beginning there was CPU , then GPU , then FPGA then ASIC, what next I hear to ask ....

Yes, you can.

Previous drivers didn't like to play nicely together, to where you couldn't have both on the same Windows installation. Now-a-days you can, and I know of several people on the forum here who do just that.

You might have to switch your monitor plug for different maintenance tasks but you shouldn't have a problem.

I ran two 5970 and one 680 (in slot #7 of all places) as my primary for gaming and that's worked out mostly fine.  Just had to move the display dongle for setting AB profiles then switch back.

Short of not having funds to buy a similar brand, why would you want too?
