When a person is laid to rest the family buys a plot and a Headstone to forever mark an eternal resting spot. What happens on the Forum to a a Member who passes? .....Nothing.  They will forever be known as Newbie,Junior,Full,Senior ETc. Etc.

Can We make a known Deceased Member eternal or something along that line?  I have faced death and it came to mind and bugged me about this subject and i'm not sure why.  If i had died what would it matter? I thought about it and it was something that bothered me. You look up my name and it shows i'm a senior Member but nothing else.   Who am i? Am i alive dead? i can look up several names that deserve attention more than me and i look at their Dormant profile and if i had not known better i would think they were still alive.   Can we honor the Members who are not with us with a Title that is fitting for them?

Just a thought. what do you think?

I like this idea. But how can we know if a certain member is dead?

There are Members who have SIGNIFICANTLY contributed to this Forum and their Profiles are just DORMANT. I will not name names out of respect. these folks Have passed and are well known by the Admin of this site.  I understand what you are saying when the Question comes up " How do you know" most people on this forum are known in one way shape or form to another member in real life such as Details,Names,Addresses Etc. It doesn't take much to Positively I.D. a deceased forum member.    I have done numerous deals on here where i can be I'D by my name address and such.  My DOX has been on this forum before so if i kicked the bucket it would be no secret.    If a "Jane Doe or Jane Dick" were to pass away the Title of "Eternal" might be harder to distinguish.

This is for the Unquestionable Members or Members who can easily prove to be Deceased.

Thanks

No offense man I see what your getting at, but if you die do you think your senior account going to "Eternal" on a bitcoin forum is going to matter?

Sorry if I am coming off as rude but it just seems a bit redic.

It means nothing to a person who has passed.  It's all about respect and acknowledgement.  It's a thank you for being a part of our Forum.

Not a bad idea at all I'd say. The only problem here is how to confirm if the user is already deceased? It seems a lot of work if they'll provide proofs like death cert etc.

There are already a few people who have Contributed to the actual Development of the Bitcoin Core who have passed. These folks are well known and should have at least be mentioned in their afterlife to the contributions to BTC. I agree there will be some that can't or will have a hard time proving that they are deceased but that would be in the hands of the Admin to decide.   For instance if i knew a person who has passed that is a forum member i could provide through PM ( a personal way to prove) to the admin proof of the deceased.

This doesn't have to be a broadcast of a Forum member passing this can be handled respectfully as it should.

Your proposition is certainly a noble one but I think that unless there is verifiable proof that a member has actually passed, this could open the door to potentially serious crimes/scams. I see no problems in acknowledging those devs/important contributors who are publicly known by their real names though.

It's a noble idea but i don't think it would work since there is noone in position that would confirm that the member in question has passed.
Also, there would be an unknown number of people who would get to the account login and try to sell it.

The people are not forgotten, they have families, friends and loved ones who will keep them in their memory and honour them in that way.

If the Eternal Rank were actually a thing, I guarantee you that a bunch of people would just stop using their accounts until they get Eternal, and then sell/continue to use them. It's a nice gesture, but would never work in reality.

It just crossed my mind that in that case, there would be Eternal members that would be sooner or later making post that would disrupt the very idea of it.
The truth is that those ones "compromised" would be easy to spot, but the lack of moderation in that area would pose an additional issue.
All things considered, i don't think this would work very well.

It could be good but not so necessary. I don't mind seeing Eternal under Hal's name for example.

This is a forum not an obituary. It's really not even feasible to do this nor do the admins have time to verify who might be dead or not and it would be hard to verify completely. How do we know when someone is dead? When their "relative" pops and announces that user x died yesterday? Or would we need their death certificate? Even that wouldn't prove much seeing as 99% of people here are nameless or anonymous. When most people die their online social media accounts etc will just die with them and become inactive, but anyone who has contributed to bitcoin and passed on like Finney will be remembered by the work they did, but for every regular user here they will just cease to post and become inactive. I reckon people would also likely just try exploit this as well and it would be quite easy to try fake your own death with online obituaries etc.

These guys are completely correct.  It's a beautiful thought, but it would surely be abused.  It wouldn't be very long before we'd have talking ghosts.  Or, perhaps ghosts whos signature ad changes but never the text, ha!

It would certainly be some kinda lot of work and mainly would just provide another goofy way to people to buy and sell and trade accounts and try to game the systems around here.

Just a thought, if a certain user is declared deceased and received an "Eternal Rank" on his/her account, maybe locking the account or disabling anyone to login would be enough to not use the account anymore. Though I think this is a great way of showing respect to people who have at least lend their time and share their knowledge in this forum, the hard part is verifying whether the user is really deceased or not. It would be a time-consuming effort I would say, and it will not in any way help bitcoin or any other developments take place. I don't want to sound rude but the idea is not that feasible.

Although this idea is one with good intention, I too don't believe that it is feasible to implement a foolproof system.

I would have thought that a significant rank for those who have contributed to the Bitcoin community via the forum would have been sufficient.

I agree with some comments, but i want to add something.
Remember that in addition to ranks, there are "badges" such as "Bitcoin expert" or "Bitcoin core developer"

Maybe we can create another one for "historical" dead people. Anyway, there will always be people that we don't know that may have done more than the others...

Like all the other things, here the problem are always the people Wink.... However I also think it is a honorable idea but like hilariousandco said "This is a forum not an obituary." and the two things should not be in touch.

even it is noble idea, I'm coming here to relax, enjoy some discussions and learn something new, because this is just forum about technology and not obituary aggregator. simply, I don't want to see, who passed here..sometimes is better, if you are not aware about everything..
