If Greece fails, can the country disappear?

What if the worst happens? The country gets "acquired" by Turkey or Cyprus or something...what an awful outcome.

Greece, the Greek people have brought so many great things to the world that to lose their existence as a formal place and country would be really, really sad.

Just because they have defaulted on their debt, it doesn't mean that the country as a whole will be auctioned to the highest bidder in Ebay. Greece is still having one of the most powerful armed forces in the Balkan region. The International Monetary Fund and the Eurozone can kiss their money good bye, and the Greeks will just move on by replacing the Euro with Drachma.

No one can buy a country.
They are broke so what? They will change maybe their currency and start from beginning,
but i never heard that someone bought a country.

btw. Argentina was also broke a few years ago, and look now.

Well, Argentina is nearly broke again Smiley. Perhaps Argentina in not the best example for getting broke then get back on track and turning to a great success story.

I doubt any other country would want Greece, even if it was on the auction block.

looking at it like a business buy out, there's not a lot of positive cash flow in that flea bitten dog.

maybe buy some of the islands, at least you could pull some tourist $$$ in.....

Greece is screwed.  If they can't negotiate something with the IMF and the rest of the Eurozone, which apparently they have no desire to do except on their terms, they'll leave the Euro and you'll be able to paper your walls with Drachmas.

Will be an interesting show, no matter which way this one turns as if they negotiate something with the other parties after bulling in like this, other nations will know that the laws aren't worth the paper they're printed on and the Eurozone will bend if necessary.  If they end up leaving the EU, that in itself will be fun to watch....

So they default on their debt and they're left to figure it out on their own. No one will lend them money. Building back their economic system will take a super long time. A lot of people will be left broke (Pensioner's, long term unemployed) and they'll have to deal with that situation or not deal with it all.

But you don't think the void of strength will usher in some new power or political brokering, i.e., Turkey coming in to save the day and raise their flag overhead at the same time? I realize Turkey would be the LAST country the Greeks would allow to come in, it's just an example.

Good to know that Greece isn't going to disappear. Good to know I don't have a Greece pension. I'm a little bummed someone confirmed here that countries can't be sold on eBay, wtf?

If they default, probably.

I don't think the political brinksmanship is over, however.

Either the Eurozone will blink or Greece will.

If neither does then it's likely they're on their own.  Thing is, it seems they'll go bust if they do that anyhow, won't be able to pay their pensioners etc.  Nobody in their right mind will buy their bonds, so I don't see where they come up with financing in a scenario whereby they default and leave the Eurozone.

Naturally if they wipe the debt to the EU/IMF from their books they look a lot better, but I don't know how far that will take them.

I guess there are other scenarios, such as default without leaving the Euro, or a partial default, partial bailout, partial restructuring etc., that can be worked out, but I'm not close enough to this or with enough knowledge of how all of that works to really have an educated guess at what the full range of options really is.

If Greece does go up on ebay I'll bid 50 bucks for the island of Chania.  I was there a few years ago.  Nice place.  Run down as hell, but still I'd take it for the 50 stones....

Unfortunately, countries have proven to be very resilient. I wish all countries to disappear, but most people wouldn't know how to organize their lives without the stinking umbrella of "their" country. What we've seen recently were break-ups, like in Czechoslovakia, or Yugoslavia. Just North of Greece. I suppose Greece could break up with some islands declaring independence but I haven't seen any sign of this yet.

I used to be a citizen and a taxpayer. Those days are long gone.

I have often thought that what if some rich billionaire offered to pay off the whole debt Greece has, i know they wouldn't own the country but what control could they possibly have?

There is no billionaire who has enough money to repay all of Greek's debt.  Smiley

Nothing will change for greece excpet going from the euro back to the drakma.

But if we confiscate the wealth of all the Greek oligarchs, it will be enough to pay back all of the Greek debt.

This method is no longer viable. Even before Tsipras became the president, when the opinion polls showed SYRIZA in the lead, most of these billionaires moved their wealth to safe havens such as Switzerland and London, with the help of Goldman Sucks and HSBC. Now it will be impossible to repatriate all that back to Greece.

It's not gonna happen. European union will not allow this. Becouse this will affect all the europe. And it will affect Euro currency. Greece will stay in euro zone.

For sure, kicking Greece out of the European Union will have its own negative consequences. But at the same time, allowing Greece to remain will be even more risky.  Other countries in similar situation, such as Portugal, Ireland, Italy, and Spain will get encouraged by this step, and they too will default on their debt.

Greece bankrupt many times. I don't know how's that even possible, but looks like they're doing great. No need to save money, just spend it - somebody will cover debt anyway. (their thinking)

I think that Greece can not disappear as a state, even though Europe is pressure from all sides, I think it will be drawn from the crisis. If not disappeared as a state for all these years of existence, one of the oldest countries in the world, not even now!

No one can buy a country.
They are broke so what? They will change maybe their currency and start from beginning,
but i never heard that someone bought a country.

btw. Argentina was also broke a few years ago, and look now.

That didn't stop Germany from trying a few years ago, when Merkel offered to take over a few of the Greek islands as part of debt repayment.

It'd be rad if Greece returned to the ancient city-states, with Neo-Spartans sporting mech suits in the post-capitalism post-WW3 apocalypse.

Nations that have been disappearing until now, as the Soviet Union, Czechoslovakia, Yugoslavia, etc. were multinational, without a unified national identity.
This is not the case with Greece, and although they are passing a very difficult financial crisis, I do not think that can be dissolved as a nation or country.
Their national spirit, unity and pride is very strong, so if they go bankrupt as a country they will survive as a single and united state.
