Inspired by http://tinyhousenews.info/tiny-house/are-we-losing-the-soul-of-the-tiny-house-movement/ which got me a thinkin'...

Quote
In a recent post entitled Tiny House Living: the Ultimate Un-Making Project? I outlined my deeper motivation for going tiny. I started to make the case for why tiny house living is more about the intention to live simply and with less reliance on external things for happiness than it is about the house itself. But that got me thinking: with all the newer (and bigger, more elaborate, feature-rich) tiny houses being built these day, as we losing the soul of the movement?

Has Bitcoin, too, lost its soul?

Depends. If by soul you mean being an almost secret currency only really used and understood by a very small community - then perhaps yes. But that might not be bad.

Was Bitcoin meant to stay underground, in the dark, used by just a handful of people?

I feel like mainstream use (which we're not even close to) is the inevitable goal, right?

actually bitcoin was always like that and it started like that, so this is not even a problem, after the doge mania ended, bicoin simply returned to its root, but if someone takes the case of the fact that many merchants started to adopt bitcoin after the doge mania, then bitcoin is everything but a niche market

bitcoin has lost is initial magic at least for the moment

A little bit.  But not totally.  You want all of it back?  Everyone listen to Amir Taaki imo.

As long as we have ways to circunvent about unfair laws its ok.
It was predicted that whats happening would happen as we reach mainstream success, not necessarily a bad thing if we have alternatives and we do.

What is everyone's definition of 'soul'?

If remaining the plaything of libertarian whack jobs is soul, then I'm all for losing it. It has the capacity to help millions of people around the world if they choose to utilise it.

Whether we like it or not it is slowly creeping into mainstream acceptability. It's also spawned the technology to stay under the radar and continue the original ideals be that via other coins or layers on top.

It's basically money. By definition money is the opposite of soul.

Money is still the root of all evil, digital or not.

Still, I know what you are getting at. The problem is, BTC can do none of the good, libertarian minded things it promises unless it is widely adopted. And like money, it is t good or bad in of itself, it's what you do with it.

Personally, I find moral discussions repugnant. Good and evil are just concepts. Probably the most divisive and destruction I've concepts out there.

Bitcoin never really had a soul. It seems to have attracted a lot of scum though, which is just sad and disappointing.

Internet + money + quasi anonymity = what did you expect?

I'm pretty impressed that it isn't more scummy. Thankfully the time of the screaming arseholes is drawing to a close in terms of infrastructure. I'm sure there'll always be a steady supply of private suckers though.

What is more disappointing is number of people who fell for empty promises. If something is too good to be true then it's lie. Don't expect to be bitcoin millionaire just because you invest in some guy dubious project.
Bitcoin has no soul, but people do; if you remember this and don't follow idiots you will be fine, remember, trust needs to be earned.

Mindless greed is as old as the hills. I truly cannot understand how people fell for some of the stuff that's popped up on here but it will never, ever change.

Check the Paycoin thing. Any regular human with a modicum of cellular function would have known it was a heap of shit and lies. It was so screamingly obvious it was painful. That didn't stop people maxing out their credit cards and refusing to stop believing long after it was obvious.

Hopefully those who've been burnt weren't burnt too badly and now exercise due diligence.

Does Bitcoin have a soul in the first place? Huh

I think bitcoin doesn't have a soul per se, but the bitcoin users who use it. Also, bitcoin isn't meant to be that underground, kept in secret, and only be used by a few people--it is designed to be used by the masses to at least be freed from the control of greedy banksters and their government. Bitcoin wasn't meant to be only used by a few, and I think comparing it to a tiny house isn't correct at all, though the idea of simplicity is somewhat right for bitcoin.

I think BTC should be neutral, this neutrality fits well within its pseudonymous nature. Then as an option, you can have super anonymity with stuff like Darkwallet, this way we can have the best of both worlds. Unfortunately it seems Darkwallet is an abandoned project at this point.

Money is kind of the exact opposite of soul.

"It is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God." - God

Edit:

It's basically money. By definition money is the opposite of soul.

Money is still the root of all evil, digital or not.
