Are there any India-based companies/ groups / hackers working on Bitcoin / Blockchain tech other than exchanges / merchant payment type stuff? In general what're the coolest things Indians have done with Bitcoin tech so far?

The Bitcoin software, network, and concept is called "Bitcoin" with a capitalized "B". Bitcoin currency units are called "bitcoins" with a lowercase "b" -- this is often abbreviated BTC.

Indian tech guys from IIT and IIIT ventured in to blockchain technology,https://www.blockonomics.co/
Recently they launched new version too
http://www.reddit.com/r/Bitcoin/comments/3dh839/instant_search_is_awesome/
http://www.coinnewsasia.com/blockonomics-co-brings-instant-search-to-bitcoin/

and their alexa rank seems promising; http://www.alexa.com/siteinfo/blockonomics.co

I'm vouch for this startup.

Actually a lot of other things would be cool too . Exchanges are plenty , and for within India only 2-3 will do . I am also interested in starting up or working in a start up specially bitcoin related in the future. I really think something along the lines of startups in Philipines would probably get a lot of interest here in India.

Anything to do with money transfer, you have to be very careful. Too many regulations for NBFCs.

Yes, but probably even in those countries these regulations exist and the companies were able to follow each regulation and launch their company successfuly. It probably has a bigger scope in India than in some of those countries.

Regulations are much 'stricter' here. I am not saying that is wrong; RBI's conservatives has saved us from economic harm when the world was going through a turbulent phase. I am just pointing out the differences.
