you need to reach full member rank first, after that you can upload avatars from this page.
if you don't know what a member rank is, see this thread.

To change your avatar go to:

Profile->Modify Profile->Froum Profile Information->Avatar:   Go here

but im not 100% sure that you can change it right now.

Signature restrictions

There are restrictions on signatures, based on your activity/rank.

- Newbie: No styling (including links) allowed. Max 50 characters.
- Jr. Member: Links allowed. Max 150 characters.
- Member: Unlimited length.
- Full: Color allowed.
- Sr. Member: Size allowed
- Hero: Background color allowed

You need at least 120 activity to reach Full Member rank. Meaning at least 120 days to wait and at least 120 posts to write. It's a long way to go.
Alternatively, you can buy a Full Member account for around 0.03-0.05 BTC

You don't generally become a donator for getting an avatar..

You could just rank up your account until full member I guess? And also if you want to have it in the easy way try buying an account. See there is a lot in the auction section. Go see for yourself.
