There are so many functions of religion
1. Religion promotes social solidarity: this simply means that Religion will rise to the spirit of brotherhood.  religion is strengthens social in solidarity. Religion has the supremely integration and verifying force in human society. It is true that common belief, common sentiment, common worship, participation in common rituals etc. are the significant cementing factors which strengthen unity and solidarity

If you talk to God, you are religious, if God talks to you, you are insane.

Religion is a form of mental disorder.  Inability to perceive the reality.  Religion clouds your judgement.

The root cause of this disorder is fear of death. 

And maybe the need of purpose is also a root cause. Although religions themselves don't really give humans much purpose when you think about it, like going to heaven isn't really much of a purpose. Worshiping god forever and doing essentially the same things here but with immortality is not really an amazing purpose.

Religion is a foundation, if likened to the foundation house is important. if the foundation is bad it will lead to the house quickly brittle, but otherwise if the foundation is strong then the house will stand firmly. such as the religion, if someone has a weak religion / faith then the person will be easily affected the negative things that harm, otherwise if someone has a stron religion / faith then he will know how we use life with positive things. Religion is like a wall or foundation because it strengths the common beliefs of many people towards believing in a god. Religion binds all of it making them one in worshipping their highest god. Actually, another major function of religion is strengthened the faith of those who believe in their god. Their faith will be shaped upon having religion. But religion is somehow an organizer for those who have common belief will be at one. We can still really see people who have strong faith regardless of lacking religion.

This is highly philosophical question. Of course, religion has a function. It is there to educate people. Priests are like teachers. They show us how to educate our spirit. Priests are human like us. They are not perfect. For that reason, they make mistakes just like us. Religions, no matter what we say, have been invented by men. In that case, they cannot be perfect. Nothing on Earth is perfect. Even the atheist cannot find perfection in their denial of God. I believe that religion works like a school. It is just there to teach. Now maybe the methodology is not good but the purpose is respectful.

It bothers me really as to why many atheists are so worried about religion. Most of the vices in the society have nothing to do with religion. I cannot deny that some arise because of religion. But even atheists will agree that some are curbed by it. So, what is the fuss all about? Some are even bold enough to say that if religion was non-existent then all problems would be solved all together. No greater fallacy exists! There are many questions that science and atheism cannot answer but religion has actually made a good attempt to resolve. I believe that religion brings us great benefit. But because of how powerful its influence is, many are scared of it. If this power however is wielded judiciously, the result will be wonderful.

Religion is a group of believers of God that helps spread the news about the word of God. A group of religion do have a different  beliefs but it is simply about their beliefs in a living God.
