If money was no object, what would be the most pragmatic way to address the problem of greenhouse gases and climate change?

Planting biodiverse forest on land which would not otherwise be used for anything else was the answer put forward by the founder of Carboncoin as we know it over a year ago, and this solution has since been independently found to be the best for the planet in the conclusion of a year-long study by Oxford University. oxford tree study

The next question: How do you make money no object? The answer: it had already been done with the Bitcoin technology so the aim became to do that again and do it from the position of knowing that it could be successful.


The rapid release rate and rapid halving of Carboncoin have allowed the distribution to occur consistently for the past 18 months while keeping the energy consumption minimal. The only necessary innovation: securing the network at low hashrate, which we completed in our most recent update.

With a very small number of new coins created by the network daily, and with this reducing fast, Carboncoin is becoming very difficult to get hold of - the only sensible way to get them is to buy them.

There will only every be 16 Billion Carboncoin and it is requested that no one individual, apart from our environmental charity maintains a holding of more than 2% of this circulation, or 320M coins to allow the distribution to occur as uniformly as possible.

No Capital Controls:
To get Carboncoin to where it is today our first task was to get us able to make amendments to the protocol. The next - get a proportion of the coins donated to the environmental cause. After a round of Carbonraising and a notable donation from Hanoosh we were off to a great start. The Carboncoin Trust was formed in the UK to look after the environmental donations, with the sole object of lowering the proportion of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere by supporting natural sequestration (or planting trees).

The next step was to find land on which to plant trees, quickly finding two locations one in Hampshire, UK and one in Wyoming in the US. It was clear that what the world needed was a growth in new trees on land where there was not an economic motivation for cutting it down - hence the initial locations in the developed world, however sponsoring existing natural sequestration projects with funds in The Trust will be considered provided administrative costs of those initiatives are negligible.

As Yet No Formal Fiat Fundraising:
We chose not to raise money via conventional channels at the beginning of the project to ensure coins could be distributed as far and wide as possible. We have now reached a level of distribution we are satisfied with and have begun exploring these channels.

The first phase of the project is to get the currency used and in circulation - this is well underway with businesses starting to accept the coin - we have also launched an initiative to back carboncoin with carbon credits, which is underway

The second is to begin to release coins from the environmental wallet when the value has reached a point where they can do some real good, and use all of that money to plant biodiverse forest - this will be done in a market conscious way so as not to lower the value

The third is to distribute the coin on a massive scale to anyone who would help the environment

The fourth? We shall see when we get there – but it will be good for the environment that is for sure!


If we are successful we will have a new version of the bitcoin technology which provides unlimited funding to helping the environment, using a millionth of the electricity, at no cost to anyone - and will have made everyone wealthy in the process - because if you help this happen, you will deserve it!

TRUST:
If you would like a demonstration that this project is real and we are doing what we say we are you can have a look at our blockchain, the 600M coins (4%) of the currency donated to the environmental initiative remain untouched - we will not be doing anything with these until we are in circulation properly and this is where a great deal of our efforts are currently directed

DEVELOPMENT:
Right now carboncoin has implemented custom security functionality meaning that we are able to provide the same level of security as bitcoin using next to no electricity at all
We do have some periods where you have to wait for a block currently but that is because we are distributing coins, and not functioning as a payment service until that is completed.
We are soon to roll over to the current version of Bitcoin and at that point we will be using all of the new features in our real world adoption strategy for the good of the environment.

FORUM:
We have our own forum but this is there as a facility for when we need it, rather than a focus of our energies - we have a slack channel for those interested in helping with development. We focus the majority of our communications resources on facebook, twitter and medium.

It enables us to spread out further. Similar total numbers have been show to work previously, indeed as have much larger ones, to an extent. We've got approximately 1000 times more coins than Bitcoin.
