I remember back when I was writing sales copy I would visit this forum called "The Warrior Forum" which was a hub of internet marketing, and that forum had a nice feature called the "buy me a beer" feature. It showed up as a little beer mug in the signature of everyone's posts and if you click the the little beer mug icon it redirected to a paypal page for that use on which you could send that user a small amount of money, essentially tipping him/her for good content in the amount that could generally purchase a beer.

It was nice because when you logged onto the forum and there was a new beer sent to you, you would get a "ding ding ding" sound and get all excited and see the pm and send a thank you to the person who sent it to you.

Of course bitcoin highly improves on this concept because paypal is not involved taking a cut and limiting the transaction size etc. Bitcoin is built for this kind of thing, why is this forum not taking advantage of it?? I did some reading and it looks like it's fairly simply to add as a feature using scripts. Here is a link to a discussion about that feature on that forum:

http://www.warriorforum.com/main-internet-marketing-discussion-forum/95343-anybody-else-miss-buy-me-beer-feature.html

Quote
a couple of people used to sell a couple of different "Buy Me a Beer" scripts that you could put on your server that did the job. I know WordPress has a plugin that serves this function too if that helps you any.

I do think the forum should have integrated changetip or something similar, it just makes sense. We are the bitcoin forum after all, and quite honestly I wouldn't consider changetip bot posts as spam if they were single line and only showed for a minimum amount ($?). If they're annoying, they can be ignored, or even set as default ignored by everyone.

Why not just implement a script that adds an icon on each post that when click opens to a screen with the users public key asking how much you would like to send to the user, and then you just click send and the user gets the btc sent to their wallet and also a PM from the forum saying they've been tipped with a pleasant chirping sound when they log into the forum alerting them to their new tip they've received.

Changetip seems unnecessary if the websites implement these features themselves.

Because then you might as well just have a bitcoin:address link in sigs or on profiles. The main feature of changetip is its a social and public appreciation.

Honestly i think it would be a great feature, can't say anything else, it would be great, maybe with the new forum coming up this could happen?

I think this is a great feature idea.  I would love if we help people they might tip.

That being said I'm not sure how much it do.  I have helped a lot of people with many problems in hardware.  I have been tipped once.  But I also don't ask for it, the sig campaign kinda gives me a little for helping.

As of right now someone does not have to do a whole lot to tip already.  Click name, look at BTC address on most accounts.   And that is not being utilized so I'm not sure a tip system would be either.

Well, that directly goes against

Only showed for a minimum amount ($?). If they're annoying, they can be ignored, or even set as default ignored by everyone.

Default ignored would mean that it has no public appreciation, atleast not among most.
Similarly, minimum amount would lock out a large amount of the tips from acting towards the "main feature".

ill say it first, this is an absolutely terrible idea imo, it would cause this forum to become a cesspool of begging spam and would just make more work for the mods. "tip pls" "click tip me" "pls need $$$"

you think people complain a lot about signatures? imagine the complaints that would come against the tip button.

theres nothing here. message me if you want to put something here.

Well, tbh, that is pretty much as easy to do as asking for donations to your BTC address.
I don't think it would be spammed much if mods just ban them.

My main problem with this is that the messages would add more spam and that the changetip feature wouldn't be much different than addresses.
I don't see how begging for a tip would be different from begging for a tip and posting an address.

There are pros and cons to it. I'd like to see it implemented on a trial basis at least and I'm sure it could be added and removed quite easily. It would be nice to be able to tip quality or helpful contributions and would hopefully encourage and reward quality posters, but of course some people would ask for a tip for some rubbish. Any beggars should be dealt with in the normal way though and have the posts deleted.

Thanks man I think imma use that in my sig! I do hope they test something imbedded in the forum though. I think it's a good way to get the ball rolling with micro tipping.

<------- Those little icons under your profile name and picture. the little icon of person that you can click to view the persons profile, the other icon you can click to instant message, right next to it there should be a little icon of a beer, that you can click to send that person a tip in bitcoin. It should be linked to the bitcoin address you fill out on your profile page.

I for one think that this would be a great idea. It would add a new interesting feature to the forum, and would appreciate and possibly incent people into
helping out people more when they need, and post a better and more constructive.

I don't think the feature should be too hard to implement, so i'm really hoping to see this here, maybe with the new forum ?
btw micro tipping is everywhere, forum i a bit late to be considered as pioneer of the feature, sadly.

cheers

IICR Theymos has said that while this feature can be easily implemented, he doesn't want to implement it as he doesn't want the forum to be a place of money transfer. (Can't find the original thread for reference, sorry.)

This forum is already a place of money transfer. I think he meant he didn't want the forum to store or hold funds for people but I can't see an issue with either direct transfers or using a third party like changetip etc.

Members used to put their tip address in the signature. I've heard that tipping was frequent when bitcoin was below $100, it's nearly unheard of now. Instead, we have people offering bounties for help and small tasks.

Not only is tipping more costly than before, and it is actually a lot of work. I keep my wallet separate from the computer I use for browsing. If I need to tip, I need to save the address on my usb thumb drive and transfer the address across. Unless there is an easier way to tip using a mobile phone, app and some interface adjustments on the forum, we will not be able to bring back the tipping culture.

Well that's what changetip is for and gets around all those problems.  You could also just use an app on your phone like blockchain.info to scan a qr code which would make things easier.

I think its more the mentality more than anything. When it was $100 and below people regularly donated to my guides, even if it was still $1 or $2. As soon as it went to $1000, the donations -> 0. Before it was play money, then it became money and people have a harder time parting with it.
