I am trying to understand what Etherum actually offers that cannot be replicated.  From what I understand the only thing may be transaction time but then can that no be handled with side chains coming from Bitcoin? As for the smart contracts, can that functionality nt be added into Bitcoin?

It has taken nine months and the fight over the blockchain size limit is still strong.

Don't expect any improvements in bitcoin over the next 5 years.  They may not come from Ethereum but politics & centralized Chinese mining has stopped bitcoin progress in it's tracks.
