I'm just wondering why we can't post anonymously, I think it would be a great feature to add.

who would want to trade with a newbie? Also I don't to make 5 stupid posts just to finally get to go on other sections. I'm proposing a check box to post as anonymous but still showing your post count and/or member status. I mean what if I want to trade something I don't wan associated with my username?

That would be a good feature. Not a high priority, though.

aha I see ,
umm
well if you could have alternative named associated with the account this may be OK .. but - the post count would give you away, and the forum mods would still know. so it's not anonymous

Since the forum software is open source, you could always implement or sponsor such a feature: http://www.simplemachines.org/contribute/

I don't think you could do anything about the mods knowing but you can solve the post count identification problem by just not displaying them for anonymous posts. Member status could still be shown though.

make yourself another account
...

Test to see if I've really broken out of newbie jail.  It was kind of a hassle since my 'total time logged in' would cease and thus it took a while to get to 4 hours.  I spend more bitcointalk.org time using my real account since this one is in an incognito window.  Of course I'm not shooting for any sort of real anonymity as anyone who wastes the time to investigate would quickly realize...

For the record, if you want to make a secondary semi-anonymous account, just PM any staff member from your existing account with the name of the new account and we'll be happy to whitelist it for you.

I didn't know that, and that is very considerate of the Mods. With that said, I still think an anonymous posting method would still be pretty cool.

Interesting idea, but I would leave out the post count and possibly the status... make it fully anonymous.

Of course, the mods can see who you are anyway, and they are the ones who ban people who say things they don't like.

It makes for better scamming. For instance you could build up trust by lending all over the place to and from several versions of yourself. On the other hand that is already happening, so idkwtf.

It wouldn't change the amount of people that scam. I think OP is aiming more to sell something he doesn't want record of on his main profile. Personally, I think Anonymous posting could have its ups, allowing for people in a professional standpoint (Say DnT or something) actually say their opinion.

There could be one anonymous account on bitcointalk that everyone would be able to post from, for a fee of 0.02 btc. This would be useful to buy pr0n via the goods section anonymously, or say something that you wouldn't want your name associated with (i.e. if a user wanted to comment about something illegal in their country). Proceeds go to the forum.

* All forum users would still be able to ignore the user.
* The use of PGP would be used so buyers & sellers could verify the anonymous posting.
* Maybe have an 'anonymous' section, and all anonymous conversations go there.

Or buy. But there are other forums for that sort of thing. .onion hidden service forums.

Same here. Anonymous posting encourages scamming, trolling, and etc. and would make this forum nigh worthless. It would get abused far more than it would be beneficially used. Additionally, TOR already exists for something like this.

*John dies from the amount of abuse posts that would result from anonymous posting.*
