Tensions between South Korea and North Korea escalated Friday morning, less than 24 hours after the two countries exchanged shells over the Demilitarized Zone. After the shelling, North Korea threatened to raise the bar with full military action and its leader, Kim Jong Un, ordered troops to be ready for war.

Kim ordered a so-called "quasi-state of war." He is conducting emergency meetings with the central military commission and has sent chief commanders to the front lines to be with the troops and prepare for a war with the south if necessary. "Commanders of the Korean People's Army were hastily dispatched to the front-line troops to command military operations to destroy psychological warfare tools if the enemy does not stop the propaganda broadcast within 48 hours and prepare against the enemy's possible counteractions," North Korea's central television network reported, according to Yonhap News Agency.

I don't know if UN has responded this situation right now, since its general secretary is a Korean, Ban Ki-moon. Its could be a trigger for World War III if no country can't calm this situation down.

I think there is no danger that this incident turn into new war.
What happened is a common situation that is repeated every year at this time.
Kim must show strength and power, and prove to his citizens that he is still strong and unyielding and has everything under control.
Such situations are excellent for mobilization of hungry and desperate people in N. Korea.
This situation is an artificially caused for the purpose of Kim and his regime, and certainly will not escalate into a new war.

There won't be WWIII over Korean border. The last Korean war didn't do it and so won't the next. Kim is childish but not suicidal, he's just marking his territory.

The only way that this could end catastrophically is if China were to get involved on NK's side. If it were between the Koreas alone, I can't see anything particularly awful happening, as it is highly doubtful that North Korea has enough weapons or defense to counter South Korea.

The people of America were not ready to go to war in the Middle East. Our leaders needed something to make us want war so that they could even start something over there. When nothing seemed to change, our leaders pulled off 9/11 and blamed the Middle East for it. So, they got approval from enough of us to go to war.

The people almost never want war. War is the idea of the leaders. It is very difficult maintaining some kind of charade so that the people support a war. It is even more difficult maintaining war by FORCING the people to supply the war machines and supplies to the soldiers and the government. It's the reason we have as much peace as we do int the world.

A holy, religious war is a thing that moves peaceful people when there is nothing else. Just look at ISIS.

North Korea may have short-term war success. But they will fail.

Aren't they apparently always ready for war? They're all talk really. Even if they did start a war they'd regret it because it would then give the west an excuse to invade and 'liberate' their people. Not sure why they haven't tried to already really. Guess NK don't have anything they want.

North korea never wanted peace,  they kill ther citizens who tries to escape north korea,  who tries to phone call anyone outside north korea,  and so many more

Normally it is the North Korean armed forces which creates the provocations. But in this case, it was South Korea which created the initial provocation. They started their propaganda broadcasts towards the DPRK villages and towns, using radio stations which are very close to the international border. DPRK retaliated, destroying the radio stations.

North Korea is like the British chavs we have over here, they're always trying to pick a fight and will trash talk everybody but in the end they're full of shit, I doubt they'll invade, it's probably going to be Kim Jong Un's way of showing strength for the sake of internal politics. Never forget, for all their nationalism and brainwashing, North Korea is China's bitch, if they step out of line then China would simply cut off support, I doubt they're that closely allied.

It would take something extremely serious to properly trigger a war between north and south Korea again.

Unless the US really screws up, these situations can be handled.

I'm not sure a drama could change Kim Jong-Un mind, and I think there is no manipulating in this situation. Its just a pride problem between both country.

According to the International Institute for Strategic Studies' military balance, approximately 65% of North Korea's military units, and up to 80% of its estimated aggregate firepower are within 100km of the DMZ.

They said that they started the broadcast because they accused the north of putting some mines in the unmilitarized zone that wounded some southern soldiers

and as far I know no radio station has been destroyed

The landmine incident occurred in the no-man's land, which is outside the territorial borders of South Korea. It is a very heavily mined locality. There is no proof that the mines in question were recently planted. The North Korean officials have already issued a statement claiming that they were not behind the incident.

And you were right about the radio stations. It was loudspeakers (used for high-decibel propaganda broadcasts) which were destroyed, and not the radio stations.

Well... the superpowers will never agree to that (including Israel). For them, they should be having the freedom of using the nuclear weapons, while none of the other nations should attempt to create these sort of weapons themselves. Some good progress was being made by Jimmy Carter a few decades ago.. but his achievements were destroyed by warmongers such as Hillary Clinton.

Nowadays, world governments prefer to make weapons instead of banning that to make a 'peaceful world'. Not a good choice, but there is no better way if your neighbor countries have those weapons, so your country have to make one too. But for North Korea, I think they built nukes just because Kim Jong-un want to destroy US.

But for North Korea, I think they built nukes just because Kim Jong-un want to destroy US.

Here is the problem. DPRK is estimated to be in the possession of somewhere between 15 and 25 nuclear weapons. But their ballistic missiles are not powerful enough to strike the mainland United States. So what they will do in case of a war? They will nuke the allies of the United States in the region, such as Japan and South Korea.

And the real question is - it was propaganda of South Korea or truth regarding status of life in North Korea compared to other nations? North Korea is regime is lying, people live in fear and doubt.
I think this 'propaganda' was the truth instead of usual lies they are fed by official North Korea's authorities.

Almost all the governments in the world (including the one which is ruling United States right now) lie to their citizens, and North Korea is no exception to this. But that doesn't mean that South Korea has the right to propagate their radio channels to North Korea and try to provoke the civilians living there in to some sort of a revolt against Kim Jong Un.

Agreed. There's been "acts of aggression" in the Sea of Japan before, no?

Kim must show strength but does anyone here believe Kim could follow through with war threats or endure a war for very long? I feel like their war machine is very, very light on men, intelligence, and ability to fight for sustained periods of time.

North Korea Gets Ready For War? LOL, they've probably out of food again. And they just asking for additional gumanitarian aid this way.
"Ok they've stop paying. Lets fire at them couple times again. Make them feed us again. "
If you think that North Korea doesn't have a military force because people do not have food, think again. Let me pull up some statistics here:
North Korea has:
  • About ~690k active military personnel (ranked 5th in the World)
  • Total naval power of 1 061 (ranked 1st, more than 2x of what USA has)
  • Aircraft strength ranked 10th
  • Tank strength ranked 7th

However, some of these might be estimates and are just based on publicly available information. Here is a comparison of South Korea and North Korea.
The country should not be underestimated.

One question regarding NK and the U.S. is, How close to maximum war production output are both countries running, percentage-wise, if they decided to dive as a whole country into making war?

yeah North Korea is skew with Russia, and South Korea with USA.
arent they conscious about that. if the two country is controlled by the two big country?
and USA and South Korea have preparation 8 jet fighter to storm North Korea.
will be new drama we can saw it. what we can to do?
US is supporting South Korea, but I think the relationship between Russia and North Korea is not that close each other. Maybe Russia just take this advantage to sell their jet fighters and weapons.

Kim wants war, why? Is it because he wants to see his people killed while he sits in his bunker watching it on TV? A true leader always has his peoples best interest at heart

Well it looks like this is a no. The two countries have now reached a deal and this unnecessary conflict has been avoided. Read more about it here.A
Also, as I've previously stated don't underestimate the strength of North Korea.

Well it looks like its a truce which is good another war would be a pain to handle
(Especially considering one with nuclear powers involved on both sides MAD or not)

http://www.cnn.com/2015/08/24/asia/koreas-tensions/

After marathon talks between high-level officials, the two bitter foes said in the early hours of Tuesday that they had found enough common ground to dial back the situation.

Pyongyang expressed regret over the serious injuries suffered by two South Korean soldiers in landmine blasts in the DMZ, and Seoul agreed to switch off the loudspeakers pumping propaganda broadcasts over the border Tuesday, both sides said.

Agreed. There's been "acts of aggression" in the Sea of Japan before, no?

Kim must show strength but does anyone here believe Kim could follow through with war threats or endure a war for very long? I feel like their war machine is very, very light on men, intelligence, and ability to fight for sustained periods of time.

Yes, exactly.
As I predicted earlier in this debate, everything calmed down quickly without major consequences.
Kim showed to his people that he is strong and decisive leader, and South Korean authorities showed to their public that they are also strong and that they know how to protect their national interests but everybody were cautious and careful not to cross the border and cause open conflict.
All this is already seen many times and it's just a show for the public in both countries.

I don't know if UN has responded this situation right now, since its general secretary is a Korean, Ban Ki-moon. Its could be a trigger for World War III if no country can't calm this situation down.
There won't be WWIII over Korean border. The last Korean war didn't do it and so won't the next. Kim is childish but not suicidal, he's just marking his territory.

Agree ... dictator keep power by putting fear on citizen with ... so called agressor / war ... like Russia do now ..

Check all country who never stop to tell -> we are near the war, we will build new weapons, buy new tank ... these are mostly the country where poverty people are the biggest one ! During this time the rich dictator can rulez the land...

Looking back, this incident also just looked like another regular North Korean semi-empty threat even though this one did result in a couple soldiers' injuries...

Probably started just for political reasons in the North.

But I do believe there must be an end to this

The forces are definitely not equal.

In a one-to-one battle, the North Koreans will be victorious, as they have superior fighting skills and morale. The advantage with North Korea is that they can afford the deaths of millions of their own soldiers and still they can carry on with the fighting. On the other hand, there will be riots and civil war in South Korea if the death toll reaches three-figures.

The external involvement (USA, Russia.etc) is the most important factor.

North Korea is "ready to fight any kind of war" waged by the U.S., leader Kim Jong Un said Saturday, and the hermit kingdom had a giant military parade to prove it.

The procession in capital Pyongyang's main Kim Il Sung Square marked the 70th anniversary of the nation's ruling Workers' Party and featured a myriad of military processions and colorful dance performances, all in immaculate synchrony. It appears to be one one of the largest military parades the country has ever thrown, according to The New York Times.

Elaborate celebrations continued the next day with a dolphin trick show attended by North Koreans and international media.

"The crowd cheered and laughed as the dolphins performed their tricks to music," reported British outlet Sky News, which gained access to the event. "It was, as far as we could make out, genuine enjoyment."

While the celebrations in Pyongyang were ornate, human rights groups say that most of the country's citizens are harshly repressed and suffering under horrific living conditions.

I don't know why but news websites started to put interest over north korea too much nowadays.
There will not be war at all with North korea. Their ally is China which is probably gonna world leader in near future.

There has been serious strains in the DPRK - China relations over the past few years. China is not happy with Kim Jong Un, as he is trying to cut down his dependence on China. DPRK is importing a lot of machinery and other materials from Russia nowadays, replacing the Chinese imports. Also, DPRK is discussing allowing the Russian companies to operate in the mining and cargo business.
