I've purchased a new 6970 to replace my old 5850 so I could have 2 systems to mine with, and also as a very capable 3d card for gaming.  Previously, with the 5850, I had no problem gaming or watching videos while mining, except that performance was reduced and while gaming my bitcoin mining was slowed.

After changing the video card, reinstalling the video driver (but using same, 11.5 cat) and changing nothing else, my computer will instantly lockup the moment I start any 3d game while mining.  Even starting a youtube video will cause the same lockup, presumably because I have hardware acceleration enabled.

Anyone have any ideas?  I guess it isn't the end of the world, as I can manually stop mining before I start any 3d game or watch a video, but it's an inconvenience and annoyance and it confuses me as my 5850 could handle this just fine.

I have eliminated the possibility being an unstable over-clock or heat- the card runs fine at max 950MHz OC mining for hours, but even under-clocked to 700MHz (stock is 880) it will still instantly lockup if I try to start a game while mining.  I've had zero issues other than this one-  the computer is completely stable while mining, or while gaming, only has problems doing both at the same time.

Well for video's, just disable hardware acceleration, and that should fix it. For games, im not sure, try a different miner, and try underclocking it a bit.

I am also having this problem, I have an xfx 6950 and the pc crashes as soon as I start watching a flash video.

I normally manually turn off the mining but sometimes I forget to and it crashes or sometimes I forget to turn it back on.

How do you disable harware acceleration for videos?

Right click on a flash object > settings > then just untick enable hardware acceleration
