VW diesels have been cheating on emissions, by using the full suite of pollution control only when tested. Stocks dropped 23%.

I was trying to find out why they would bother with such a risky venture, which is f**king ironic considering that it's the car industry, which is 99.99% marketing bullshit* and 0.01% innovation**.

*Spending billions each year on developing new model shapes, headlight styles, interior decorations, and parking sensors so you don't scratch the overpriced bumper.
**A self-parking steam train?

Here's my little theory:
A guy walks into a VW showroom. He's not really sure what he wants, so he asks to test-drive a few models: a 1.6L, a 1.9L, and higher-end 2.0L with more grunt.

The 1.6L is a bit sluggish and weak.
The 1.9 is better, but still laggy on take-off.
And then the 2.0L -- oh wow, that 100mL of extra displacement really makes a difference! But the engineer in me realises that something ain't right. The biggest engine should actually have the most turbo lag and bulk, especially if it's running at a higher pressure. But buyers don't want lag, so the engine computer allows more fuel to be injected before the boost has built up. The black smoke would fail any emissions test, so the computer detects when the car is sitting on a dyno and goes into 'green' mode.

Those SOBs could have risked the same money on developing new engine technology, such as gas and steam combined-cycle micro turbines, with electric coupling to the wheels. Not even remotely similar to the 70s' turbine cars, and the problem with electric cars is the high environmental cost of battery packs which is roughly proportional to the price of making them (sorry Tesla, but you still suck without government subsidies). VAG could've made a positive difference in the world, but they chose not to. So fuck 'em.

I have a very green friend who owns one. I think it is hilarious that we find out now his car has been contributing more to pollution than mine.

Glad to hear that they got caught. I hope every other automobile corporation which cheat in environmental testing will be punished at the highest possible.
This world is for everybody. Every one of us need clean air. I can't believe how they cheat like that.
On the other hand United States of America still haven't signed Kyoto Protocol yet.
I guess we all need to stick to the Japanese tech again.

I think Volkswagen is not the only ones with the cheating software. Engineers from other car manufacturers could have known about it years before and implemented their own version of cheating code.

you are living in unicorns land... the share price, the rest who cares, it was his job. the price to be paid for dishonesty would be jail time... if you think of the amount of pollution that this person has generated and the unknown deaths that it has caused... jail time or more is certainly warranted... but I don't believe that in germany they have the balls to jail and execute a mighty executive, the pride of the nation, the maker of the volkswagen... aka a dangerous cheater.

and if you look closer, this guy could have sold all his shares as soon as the released hit the newswires, keep his annuities and now enjoy a really nice life somewhere far away from diesel engine... not good, not conducive...

but if it was gm...

They don't call them "Hitler's revenge" for nothing. Another win for the motherland.
