In the late 18th century, Junipero Serra and his goons rounded up the 5,000 member Tongva tribe in California, and sent them to various slave labor plantations controlled by the Catholic church. Within just two decades, all the males and the children were dead, due to overwork, exhaustion, and starvation. A few of the women (kept as sex slaves by Junipero Serra and his goons) were alive by that time, and they soon assimilated in to the Hispanic population. By the early 19th century, pure-blooded Tongva were extinct.

And now he has been canonized, and made a saint by the "Pope". The pope even fast-tracked his canonization.

Thank me I do not worship the imaginary god that controls the pope.   Undecided

How is this guy any different than Hitler?  In a way, he's worse, since he wiped out an entire race of men.  Hitler tried but failed.

This guy was warped beyond belief:

Quote
Emulating an earlier Franciscan missionary, Francis Solanus, Serra made a habit of punishing himself physically, to purify his spirit. He wore a sackcloth spiked with bristles, or a coat interwoven with broken pieces of wire, under his gray friar's outer garment.[24] In his austere cell, Serra kept a chain of sharp pointed iron links hanging on the wall beside his bed, to whip himself at night when sinful thoughts ran through his mind. His nightly self-flagellations at the college of San Fernando caught the ears of some of his fellow friars. In his letters to his Franciscan companions, Serra often referred to himself as a "sinner" and a "most unworthy priest."

In one of his sermons in Mexico City, while exhorting his listeners to repent their sins, Serra took out his chain, bared his shoulders and started whipping himself. Many parishioners, roused by the spectacle, began sobbing. Finally, a man climbed to the pulpit, took the chain from Serra's hand and began whipping himself, declaring: "I am the sinner who is ungrateful to God who ought to do penance for my many sins, and not the padre [Serra], who is a saint." The man kept whipping himself until he collapsed. After receiving the last sacraments, he later died from the ordeal.[25]

During other sermons on the theme of repentance, Serra would hoist a large stone in one hand and, while clutching a crucifix in the other, smash the stone against his chest. Many of his listeners feared that he would strike himself dead. Later, Serra suffered chest pains and shortness of breath; Palóu suggests that Serra's self-inflicted bruises were the cause. While preaching of hell and damnation, Serra would sear his flesh with a four-pronged candle flame — emulating a famed Franciscan preacher, John of Capistrano.[26] Palóu described this as "quite violent, painful, and dangerous towards wounding his chest."[27]

Serra did not stand alone among Catholic missionaries in displaying self-punishment at the pulpit. The more zealous Franciscan and Jesuit missionaries did likewise. But few took it to the extremes that Serra did. The regulations of the college of San Fernando said that self-punishment should never be carried to the point of permanently incapacitating oneself.[28] Some of Serra's colleagues admonished him for going too far.

We agree! oohraa! Frankly what shocks me is that if it was a sob that did anything against the blacks it would have been an outrage, the old argentinian will have had to flee the usa for his life... and maybe never reach the other side of the atlantic... but there it's the Natives... so who cares... hehehe...

In doubt always trust the "code talkers" at least they will never betray their lands.

So it cast a very nasty, nefarious, almost devilish cast on this pope and his legacy... why? that's the point I don't get... because it's the clan? I mean, jesuits support jesuits what ever? lol...

Long live the Protestant Reformation!!!

He wiped out dozens of tribes, and not just one tribe. The Tongva genocide was the most documented case of his atrocities. Before the arrival of the Spaniards, some 200 to 250 different tribes inhabited the California region. Junipero Serra was in charge of the South-West part of California. Most of the 60 or so tribes in the region suffered extinction under his "rule".

The Catholic Church and pope are not Christian. (This is coming from someone who grew up Catholic) It's not Catholic-bashing, it's just that they don't follow the bible and Jesus's teachings. It's sad that people see them and think they represent Christians.

Cult leader and famous virgin with hang ups about sex hits the town.

He´s always droning on about how actions mean more than words to him why doesn´t he distribute the Vatican´s vast wealth and land among the poor that he´s so concerned about. No, he likes to talk big and let others foot the bills. And why is this Cardinal Mahoney in his entourage, that character was forced to leave his post in L.A. after covering up for his pedophile clerical buddies. Actions and words, yeah right.

Catholic church is a very media savvy organization. They are very good in hiding the bad news (such as the priests molesting schoolchildren and nuns having sex with bishops), as a very large number of media mouthpieces are directly controlled by the Catholic church. Even in this case, most of the media outlets have managed to paint Serra as an angel.
