As an Australian I am shocked to see Bernard Tomic win a ATP final which ended a three-year drought. Tomic was behind 3-6 in the third set tiebreak before he fought back to win and beat Fabio Fognini. This was Tomic's first ATP title since 2015 and will not jump from No.123 in the rankings to No.76, making him the fifth-ranked Australian man. Now he must continue on with this form and not let it slip like he normally does.

It was a dramatic finish for the guy who keeps on saying he counts his millions, and is not serious about playing tennis. Three years is indeed a very long wait for him, and I do hope this victory acts as a catalyst for his carrier. It'll be interesting to see if he can continue his form and go on to challenge top seeds, he has more sterner tests ahead which shall go on to define his carrier.

I agree, it was a shocker to see him won after a long career drought. I don't know what he chooses tennis because he doesn't seems to take its seriously as we all know that tennis players are all passionate about the sports and not just play for the money. But Tomic is different, his very controversial indeed but I do hope that he can at least play for the Australian Open 2019 and let's see how he does this time.

Yeah I think the Australian Open will be his target to perform a lot better and maybe even challenge to make the 4th round or finals of the Australian Open. If he is able to achieve this then he could earn back some respect from the tennis fans and players. Tomic is one player to watch next year if he gets his head right as like I said he has shown that he can match it with the best when he is in form and firing. First lets see how he ends the year, maybe he could get another title under his belt heading into the 2019 season.

So everyone is on the bandwagon now. I do hope that he won't get his fans disappointed because it seems that he is a good player for Australia tennis. Australia needs more depth so adding Tomic is not a bad idea after all.

I for one ain't on the bandwagon when it comes to Tomic lol and the same goes for Kyrgios as they win a tournament and we think okay now their heads are in the right place and then boom they lose it again and go down hill. So I'm waiting to see how Tomic performs in Grand Slam tournaments before getting on the bandwagon. Australia will most likely have a new ranked number #1 tennis player Alex de Minaur who will knock off Kyrgios as Australia's number #1. Now Alex de Minaur has his head in the right place and is a good player which could challenge next year for the Australian Open.

I totally agree with you mate, Tomic now needs to get back to playing at his best in Grand Slam tournaments like he was doing when he was in his late teens. He played well in a few Grand Slam tournaments early on but then faded away so if he can get back to that form then he would gain the respect back from the tennis public. Until then this win doesn't really gain that much respect right now.

@vella85 - Exactly, there's no bandwagon on Tomic because he hasn't shown anything as of yet. Sure, when he was young he was very promising but just like the rest of tennis player who reach the pinnacle they lost interest and their career went sour. So he needed to win a couple of tournaments before we can say that he is a change man, otherwise we can call this win just another "one-hit-wonder".

Anyways, does anyone aware of Fernando Verdasco's rant on a ball boy during last month's Shenzhen Open? I was not aware of such incident, but its does look good on Verdasco image.

No I didn't even know about this rant from Verdasco on one of the ball boys, I didn't even see it on the news which normally shows this kind of stuff. Yeah I agree its not a good look for Verdasco but I guess these things can happen sometimes as the players are under a lot of pressure but still its not good to do this to a child.

Oh poor ball boy, his just trying to do his job but this so called superstars shows his bad side and everyone was watching. Well he lost his match that time so perhaps that's why he vent his frustrations to the kid but he went overboard.

Hey yes all eyes are indeed going to be on Tomnic he's won a grand slam after 3 years many will expect him to perform better and even try and win other grand slams, surely there's lots of talent in him all he needs to bring it out on the pitch.

I was not aware of such a incident normally it gets reported but then his name is not Serena Williams and he's a male that's why it didn't get covered lol. However it's a really unfortunate event which would have crippled the morale of the boy for a lifetime, agreed he's under pressure however that doesn't give him the right to destroy another human being.

Correct, there's talent inside that guy but he made a lot of questionable moves in his career, we don't want to see another Australian wasting his talent.

LOL. I guess if its a higher ran male player, it will immediately all over (but I doubt top 10 male will act like that). Roger Federer already made his statement saying that all players should respect ball boys and girls (he used to be a ball boy himself). I haven't seen any statement from Verdasco though, I guess the best way for him is to issue a public apology.

Is anyone watching the Shanghai Masters? There are some interesting matches coming up later today in the Men's quarter finals with Edmund taking on A. Zverev, Anderson taking on Djokovic and Federer taking on Nishikori so all the big guns have made it through so far and it will be interesting to see who makes it through to the semi finals. Federer and Djokovic would have to be favourite to make it through.

And there's also another controversy (again) in the match between Federer and Roberto Bautista. Bautista alleges that umpire favors Roger specially on the critical moments of the game. He accuses the umpires of favouritism for the 20-time grand slam champ during the “critical” game in the deciding set. Score was 4-4, he had a forehand but was called out by the lines man. The umpire decided to replayed the point and eventually he the lost 6-3, 2-6, 6-4.

Anybody watching Federer - Nishikori? It is a great match and if you have the means try to catch the end of it. Nishikori was trailing all the time and has for the first managed to take the lead in 2nd set. Hoping he will take the set so I can enjoy a bit more of this great match.

I just got home and missed the game. Federer eventually won against Nishikori, 6-4, 7-6 and will face Ćorić who defeated Ebden, 7-5, 6-4. On the other side of the draw, Djokovic get the better of Anderson, 7-6, 6-3 and will square off with Zverev, winner over Edmund, 6-4, 6-4. I'm more interested to see Djokovic vs Zverev semi-finals match. Smiley

Yeah I missed the matches as well which is a shame as I really wanted to see these matches as the big guns are playing. Its looking like it could be a Federer/Djokovic final unless Coric can pull off an upset against Federer. I actually give Zverev a chance against Djokovic as he has been in fine form all season so I wouldn't be surprised to see him win but it will most like be Federer/Djokovic final.

I'm a little shocker to see that Federer lost his match in straight sets, I didn't get a chance to watch the match so I don't know if he was on his game or not but it does show that he was outplayed. Congrats to Coric on making the final where he will face Djokovic who also won in straight sets.

It's not a surprise to me due to age difference of Coric and Federer. Of course young bloods are hungrier for title and the veterans played for just their hobby which means they don't really play for the championship.

Yeah you could be right, like I have been saying in this thread for a while now. The young talent always seem to play well in these tournaments and make the finals but when it comes to the Grand Slams they fail towards the end. We did see some of the young talent make the finals this year in Grand Slams but they couldn't go on with it. Well congrats to Djokovic on winning another tournament easily beating Coric in straight sets and will become the world number #2 overtaking Federer on Monday. Its a surprise to me that it is only Djokovic's 4th title of the year but he has just come good at the middle to back end of the season and is now 35 points behind Nadal in the ATP Race for London. Who will finish number #1?

We would love to see Federer vs Djokovic, however it didn't happened. Coric gave his all but its not enough to overcome the streaking Djokovic in the finals. Well want surprises me is how Djokovic recovered in 2018, remember his resurgence from tennis just came in the 2nd half of year and now claim to the #2 stop. So its going to be a exciting year end as Djokovic has the momentum and only 35 points behind Nadal. I'm going for Djokovic to end finish the year at the top. As I have said, he is unbeatable as this point and his confidence is really high and seems can't do anything wrong.

I'm with you on Djokovic becoming world number #1 by the end of the year as 35 points isn't much and I would think Nadal would need to win at least one more tournament to hold the number 1 ranking or at least make some finals. I agree that Djokovic will be hard to stop now as he has a nice run on now and when he gets in this form he is very hard to stop. I remember a few years ago when he had this run of form no one could stop him and its looking like this again and if he can hold this form heading into 2019 then we could see him win most of the major tournaments and even catch Nadal on Grand Slam titles. Its going to be an interesting end to the year to see who finishes number #1.

I just read that Nadal is set to return to playing at the Paris Masters. The problem Nadal has at keeping his number #1 is if Djokovic decides to take a wild card into a tournament before Paris, he could pull ahead of Nadal and become world number #1. Then if they meet in a match it could be the match that decides the world number #1 so it will be an interesting end to the season to see who finishes number #1.
