I cannot possibly imagine an additional 3-4 TH of GPU's or fpga's have been started up in the past week or so.

It has always seemed weird to me that these hardware companies would not pre-mine before selling.

This community is willing to throw money at anyone for months in advance just to gain an edge.

This mentality falls right into someone who would want to take your capital and then use it against you.

Coupled with some recent big sell orders on Mt Gox, and it seems to me someone is unloading some coins.

Of course this could be some people with stashes unloading, but it seems to be an odd coincidence.

I'd say we have ASIC miners out there and they are taking advantage of the 50 BTC blocks before they're gone.

FPGA sales are essentially halted, so that's impossible.

According to their business plans and published statements? None of them are running final gear right now, and none of them are using it to mine on MainNet (nor will they)

They are all working with prototypes and simulations with just-in-time manufacturing for initial batches. Watch the updates in the BFL and bASIC threads and you can see things moving, but stuff gets in from China, gets flashed and tested, and goes right out the door with Tom. BFL is likely in the same boat.

Maybe they have had a prototype or 2 running, but they are using testnet-in-a-box, so we won't see the hashes even if they do. Until they have final hardware there is not much point to running a prototype board continuously, especially if there are material differences in components between the two.

You tell a few million Uni students about this (with an ear back to mommy that a new video card is needed for the computational mathematics class they are taking) and you are going to have 1000+ new miners easy. I thought I'd look at the numbers - AMD had a net revenue of $342M in their last quarter from their graphics division.  That's $26.3M a week.  If we estimate that 10% of sales is 7-series, so 7850, 7870, 7950 and 7970, that's $2.63M sold at an average price of $300, then that's about 8766 cards sold a week.  Average hash rate of 400MH, gives you 3.5TH.

Let's say it rose by 4 TH over 5 weeks, so 17.5TH sold, we're looking at more than 1 in 5 sold becomes a miner.

Possible, but not probable.  And I agree with that last quoted sentence, now would not be a good time to start mining.

There is a thing called "Testnet in a Box.

This is what is being used for testing by every ASIC company according to their public statements. (Except Avalon because he is building his own test rig)

No ASIC companies are mining on the main BitCoin network.

You should be quarantined to the newbie area for not doing a search and seeing the multiple threads that have speculated on this fact and put it to bed. HARD.

Unless you have any new information on this (including pictures or a known ASIC manufacturer employee admitting in public that they will test on mainnet), go troll elsewhere please.

Gamer with an OC'd 7970 GHz running aprox. 18-20 (Sometimes 24) hours/day while at school and asleep at 715MHash/s.
Made almost $30 in about a week, and I already have the hardware.
Too bad Steam doesn't accept BTC yet. x3

This is a valid theory, due to AMD lowering the price of the 7970 by a couple hundred bucks.
