...

It seems to me that Russia has missed the boat re Bitcoin.  A lot of wealth is being created (Argue with that? I just bought gold with some BTC).  Russia, as far as I know, has no serious miners.  Nor (AFAIK) do they let their citizens trade RUBLES for dollars or Bitcoin.

This appears to be very short-sighted of Putin (unless he WANTS his citizens a little poorer than they otherwise would be, on the whole).

Russian citizens would seem to have trouble participating in this nice revaluation of BTC.

Russia like to maintain as much control over its people as it can, they've always been like that, they were even worse years ago.

Bitcoin doesn't enable them to control people so obviously they hate it.

All of the rich Russian's have got the **** out of Russia.

Russia is hurting itself more with their poverty, close mindedness and rampant drug and alcohol usage.

Yes this is hurting them a lot, all of the above, I agree! But I think that they are also missing a boat on Bitcoin. And not just Russia, but every country in the world that bans it while majority of other countries allow it and continue to strive on its technology. Just like EU is doing for example. Seems to me China has started doing it as well, US of course even though they are regulating heavily, but they are regulating everything!

You can flame Putin all you want, but if you just take a fast look at their GDP since Putin is in charge, you will see that he knows what he's doing (atleast most of the time)
I'm guessing he's trying to protect his citizens from making risky investments, but in the end , it seams that he is only going to prevent them from cashing profits.

No. If we turn the discussion this way we are going more towards a political discussion. Compare the US debt in % of GDP to the debt of Russia, and then ask who is hurting themselves and with what.

Exactly.

Yes, they're obviously hurting themselves. More and more global companies are accepting Bitcoin. It's being feature in famous magazines (e.g. Economist) and whatnot. Remember, they can always remove the ban and will probably have to unless they want to lag behind US, China and EU.
