Hello great community!

I've never farmed bitcoins. I have, however, a moderate understanding of how things work. I lurked around a couple of sites and threads in this forum and I've seen a lot of great propositions and responses.

This is my scenario: I currently live in a small studio on my own. The room doesn't have a window but does have air conditioning (however, this area is typically very cold during most of the year). Most importantly, I DO NOT have to pay for electricity. I can leave the AC running all day long and nobody would care.

The main argument against mining (and especially going solo) is that electricity is a ****. Therefore, do you think it's a good idea to buy a mining rig to take advantage of this?
What are some good options in the $300-900 range? What about the $1000-2000 range (Maybe an Antminer S7)? I'm not thinking about going higher than that because I have not done this before and I'm first just thinking about experimenting.
Pool or solo?
Will I hate my life having that running all day long in my small room?
What's the life span of the rig? What environment considerations should I have (dust, humidity, etc.)?

My goal is not to get rich. I think this is something I would enjoy doing for the sake of tinkering something; however, I will indeed like the extra pocket money.

TradeBlock's calculator, with an input of 4500GH/s (S7 advertises 4.76TH/s), returns an approx. of $150 dollars per month.

Finally, do you guys have any articles/threads that you would recommend a newbie?

if you don't need to pay anything besides your miners then go with the s3 or s5 they cost far less than s7 and should deliver a roi which will require less number of months

s7 is only for those with expensive electricity like me  Grin(i didn't bought one, because my roi would still be horrendous)

even if you buy a S7 it should ROI before the halving.

BUT they are loud. you will not sleep with one in a room. I have one in a guest house about 60 feet away from my home and anytime i step outside i hear it screaming. like someone was running a loud vacuum.
I would never run one in my own home.

you are exaggerating...
I and my family are totally fine with S7 in a spare room, especially with ambient at 75F (23.8C) or lower with fans at 4200/3980.
Believe me, they would have told me if it was bothersome-which happened with unshielded S5.
I just had to put in on a wire cart and put some some couch pillows on three sides and on top. On the exhaust side I made a bit of a labyrinth with cardboard posters so exhaust has to bounce around before exiting. This does not result in miner overheating.
These modest measures resulted in just 62-63 dB at 1 meter distance at full speed.

I think one of the key words is spare room.  I would hate to put a lot of my miners in bedroom or living room.  But a spare room is perfect in most cases.

I think it depends on how much OP want's to risk with free electricity the safe bet is S3 or newer hardware that's used and cheaper.  This is quicker on ROI in most cases considering no electricity cost.   If you wan't a bigger risk (and return most likely) you can go with the S7.

Keep in mind even with free electricity never invest more money in a miner then your willing to lose.

This. If you have free electricity you don't need the latest machines out there, but believe me good times are over for home miners Wink
