I moved the Avalon 6 to the 2KW 220V IBM PSU yesterday and it looks like I went from 3.3TH to 3.4TH and from 12V on the EVGA to 12.1 now.  I'm not sure if it's coincidental or not but I've been running trouble free with the Avalon 6 until the heat wave hit Houston yesterday and with record temperature of 81 and up to 83 today which made my garage be at 91 and 93.  I just vent out my garage to keep it cool and I notice my Avalon 6 gets really really hot but only on 2 side.  I rotate it so that the HOT side are on the top and right side so my AIR MOVER fan from the back can cool it and push the heat to the front where there's an EXHAUST Vent out to my garage door.   After doing that, it help cooled my Avalon by about 3 degrees C but then the Avalon stop reporting Temperature for all the HASH boards.  Rebooting it also didn't fix the issue.  Power cycling the PI fixed the issue. The S7 runs much cooler due to the Stronger fan and is running between 61-66.  The Avalon 6 is running at 70 and 76.  Wonder why 1 board is running 5-6 degree C higher than the other consistently.  Wonder how it's going to be when outside temperature hit 80-90 and garage temp 100.  I have a feeling the S7 can deal with the heat because it's fan is so strong, not sure about the Avalon which typically runs 10 degree C higher than the S7 and is already so close to the 80C safety limit.  I think many of us see the Avalon running at above 70 degrees even with our garage is super cold.  Wonder if the box just prefer to be in the 70 range?

Avalon just shut down after 2 minutes of running with the PI restarted. I had to manually power off and on again.  Starting to act up, wonder if it's not liking the heat.  Changing the minimum FAN speed to 100% to avoid any issues with the Controller having issues communicating or updating the FAN speed automatically due to that glitch I saw earlier where FAN speed stopped reporting.  Don't want any burn out issues like the S7 have when losing connection to Internet and burning boards.

P.S If you don't mind the extra noise level which I don't anymore since the S7 will always be way louder, seems like manually setting the fan minimum to 100% is the safest bet.   Now my temp is showing as 65 and 71 vs auto and min at 20% it was 71 and 76, up to 72 and 77 which is way too hot for me to be comfortable with.

Just "Mining" my own business.

There are several different types of Bitcoin clients. The most secure are full nodes like Bitcoin Core, which will follow the rules of the network no matter what miners do. Even if every miner decided to create 1000 bitcoins per block, full nodes would stick to the rules and reject those blocks.

your garage temp was quite a bit more then mine.  I got up to 88 and 89 f in the garage.

what rpm do you read at 100% fan speed? on the avalons?

I am still down clocked right now to control temps..

I am doing 4800gh on the avalon vs 7800gh

I am doing 4800gh on the s-7 vs    5100gh

RPM showing right now is 3930-3960 for AVALON 6 at 100% .  S7 is showing 4320 to 4440

it is hard on the fans to max them at 100%

try 80% on the avalon

try 60% on the s-7  yeah sounds too low it is not it should give you 3800 rpm which is good enough.

_______________________________________________________________________________ __

once fans are a bit lower .  down clock a bit  ______ sucks but heat it is a mofo and kills gear.

get the avalon at freq 460

get the s-7  lower  if you were at freq 625 drop to freq 600
if you were at freq 650 drop to freq 625.

This to try to lower the garage to 85-88f

And lower your gh by 5-10%  until outdoor temps drop a bit.

SMRACer said he ran these boxes even at 115F on some days and no issues except for the Monarch boxes before.  I have higher confident that the   S7 can handle the heat better than the Avalon as it have dual fans and at higher RPM.  It's shell is not even hot.  I will drop to 80% and see but the fact that the fan reporting issue and the auto shutdown have me a bit concern so I will be monitoring the Avalon 6 more closely with heat.  Right now it's very stable with 100% FAN speed but yeah that will wear out the fan faster.

The antminer s-7 can run in a 100F plus room

No sure what the avalon six can do.

but the psu's become less efficient at the 45c mark.  So if the room is 100f or 38c   it will act to get the psu's warmer.  you lose efficiency and the higher hash just costs more then the power used.

as for the fans on the s-7    60% setting gives  3800rpm  100% setting does 4400rpm  ..

I lost the net for 29 hours while on a trip   my fans were at 60% and 3800 rpm no issues. To make sure the fans are at 3800 rpm  try 60% and 65% it varies from s-7 to s-7.

All this is temporary until your temps drop back to normal in Texas.

Most manufactures are pretty cautious on operation temperature.    A lot can be pushed much harder and some data centers have done it.   I have not heard anyone putting the Avalon 6 in a stress test though.

Experienced my first problem so pretty good considering a month and like 4 day's of running.  I had a power outage and it seems the RPI picked up both but did not mine on both.   So I can't really blame the miner as it was a power outage.  So for that to be only problem I've had in this amount of time I still consider it to truly be a solid miner.

Agreed, my little A have been stable up until today.  It's hashing along wo issues at 100% fan speed, just reduced it to 80% now that I'm able to drop garage temp down to 86 by venting out the Garage.  Wonder how it would have handled it if I changed the voltage and hashing at 3.9TH.  Until I get better stress test, I need to monitor it closer and pamper it.

P.S Very strange but after changing to 80% FAN Speed, this unit is running 70 and 75C and is average 3.5TH after 45mins.   I highest average I got before this was only 3.4TH after changing to 220V.  I'm finally getting advertised rate.

nice to see the temps improve and the hash rate jumped up.

The avalon 6 uses a fan/freq/temp/volt driven   software  it controls the hashrate  so weird results happen when altering fan speeds and voltage.

My Avalon 6's are running in the cold today.  It was low to mid 30's F so pretty cold.  It did not seem to effect my mining.  I think biggest effect is voltages as far as speed.  I know the rumor about hotter running faster... with this cold and I'm getting my normal I'm not totally sold on that one anymore.

It's quite interesting that the 2 box are reporting a wide difference in temperature 69 vs 73 even though they are in the same location.  Again the box does like to run HOT as it's forcing itself to be in the 69-76 C temp even when you're in freezing cold Temperature.  For the S7 it will be in the low 50C temp.   My Avalon six is not running much lower temperature now that my gargage is 49 F vs when it was at 90F.  I had to manually force the fan to run at 80-100% if I want it down a few more C lower then normal.  Very strange how they are doing this and I'm not very comfortable with the box running in the 73-78C range.  I just changed the FAN speed to 80% and that made the box run at 59/63 which is a range I'm more comfortable with.  I'm not sure why the Auto FAN control prefers to keep it much much hotter.  I rather lose a cheap easily replaceable FAN then melting my expensive HASH boards.

P.S Strangely I seem to get the best hash rate at 80% fan speed vs default of 20% as well.

FYI, A new MM and RPi firmware were just released - I installed the MM on all my machines without any hiccups, but there's no facility to upgrade the RPi via the web interface, so you have to backup your setting then reflash the card and get it going again (haven't done it yet).  Looks like some good changes according to the changelog (also nice to see a company that actually TELLS you what has changed).  They also added support for the RPi2, so if you were dying to run one of those, your Christmas prayers have been answered.

The links as always are on their wiki:

well I have a rasp pi 2   so I may try to get that running.

When ever I did a new card for my rasp pi I saved an old one.

So you need 2 or more sdcards to be safe.

Any indication on how the new MM firmware affects hash rate?

I've upgraded both the MM and RPi (I was running an older version, so I had to reflash the cards, but the latest looks like it can be flashed via the web interface).  So far no real difference in performance, everything seems to hash exactly the same.  I looks like the interface is a bit faster, but TBH I could just be seeing things.  A couple things on the RPi the might be helpful - when you replace it, it doesn't have DHCP enabled and was set to 192.168.0.100 - but I backed up all my settings in advance, and just re-applied them once it was booted.  The only other thing worth noting is that the one with bcm2708 in the filename is for the older Pi, and with bcm2709 is for the Pi 2.

As far as the Pi 2 doing anything to the performance, I would be shocked if it did - the CPU on the Pi isn't exactly being hammered... I think the main reason they were going after the Pi was just availability.

What temperature is the Avalon running now by default after the upgrade?  Is it still the super hot range of 70s?

Looks like the fan bracket has arrived in Texas.  Let us know how it works.

Yes, they are way way behind on the delivery date.  I'm surprise they even do morning deliveries as they usually deliver around 4PM.  I was anxiously awaiting it over the weekend to start tweaking my environment.  I will check the mail after I'm back from work and post update on your masterpiece on this thread as well as your thread.  Please quote my post when you see it so that the picture will show up for others to view.
