What wallet do you have or plan to use? Several wallets have the option to sweep it. If you don't decide which one yet I recommend you Electrum. There you just have to go to Wallet > Private keys > Sweep. Then manually type your private key and you're done.

Importing the key means it's attached to your wallet. It becomes one more address which the wallet can use and its private key is permanently stored there.
Sweeping the key means creating a TX that spends everything from your 'paper' address into any address already present on your wallet.

Sweeping is preferred basically for 2 reasons:
- Your 'paper' address' private key was already stored somewhere and you typed it. As a result there's a small chance it was compromised in the process (key logger, malware). Therefore you shouldn't use it again and sweeping allows you that.
- Most wallets are now HD so a single backup holds every address, even those not used yet. If you import the address it wouldn't be on the HD backup and you could eventually lose it.

Also don't forget about "change addresses". Lots of people lost bitcoin because they didn't understand "change addresses".

Basically, if you import your paper wallet to, say, a mobile wallet, and you don't use all the bitcoins that were associated with the paper wallet, make sure to create a new paper wallet and send the "change" or "unspent" amount to this new paper wallet. Some people think that the unspent amount would still be associated with the old paper wallet.

If you have a computer then choose a desktop wallet such as Electrum but if you don't have access to a computer and only mobile then Mycelium is a good wallet for Android. I would recommend blockchain.info wallet as the last resource, since it is an online wallet and is not considered safe. Also, make sure to take back up of keys/wallet of the new wallet before sweeping the paper wallet in it.

Mycelium is a much better choice IMO, it supports BIP38 decryption which is a encryption standard which paper wallet uses. If you don't have Qr code, consider using Electrum on desktop instead.

Thanks, I will try mycelium. So let me see if I got it right, I will use mycelium to sweep my paper wallet and the btc in it will all be transfered to my mycelium wallet, is that right?

You can but they do not directly allow. You can try to type the private key elsewhere and copy it to save it to clipboard. Then go to Cold storage and then select [Get private key from clipboard]. This would allow you to send to other addresses.

Go here: https://github.com/pointbiz/bitaddress.org , download the Zip file, take it to an off-line machine, extract it and open bitaddress.org.html in a browser, move your mouse around till the functions become active then click on "Wallet Details" and type your Key to "Enter Private Key" field and hit "View Details", it will show the Qr code of the private key below, use open your mycelium and scan the qr code.

Are you using Android? There is a menu button at the top right. Click on it and you will see Cold Storage. Then you can choose where to get the private key from. Refer to my post above.

If you want, you can directly import it instead of using it to spend the coins using cold storage function. Copy the private key to your clipboard first by copying the entire private key, by typing it somewhere and copy it. Then go there and click advance, click [Import Bitcoin address or private key from clipboard].

To sweep Bitcoins into mycelium wallet, ensure that you already have a backup (copied the seeds first displayed when you create the mycelium wallet). Then select the account created by mycelium then go to Balance, click on the Qr code and press copy to clipboard. Next, select the address you imported, press send and press clipboard in the "Enter receipient address" then click "Enter Amount" and press send.

If you want to send to another address, just select the address you imported and press send, input address and amount then click send.

I would much rather create a throwaway account on Blockchain.info and do a sweep of those coins and then send those coins to a more secure wallet. Blockchain.info makes it so much easier for you. You not going to use that address again anyways, so tough shite, if it is compromised afterwards.
