ISTANBUL — Turkey issued a statement on Friday saying that comments by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan — in which he cited Hitler in response to a question about whether a strong presidency was possible in Turkey — had been misinterpreted.

Mr. Erdogan, who is pushing to imbue the largely ceremonial presidency with sweeping executive powers, told reporters late Thursday that “there are already examples in the world.”

“You can see it when you look at Hitler’s Germany,” he said.

Mr. Erdogan did not elaborate, but his comparison to Hitler drew immediate criticism because of what many view as his increasing authoritarianism. His comment also raised the issue of how the leader of one of the world’s most influential countries, an American ally and member of NATO, would mention Hitler in the context of his own tenure.

On Friday, the office of the presidency said that “Erdogan’s ‘Hitler’s Germany metaphor’ has been distorted by media outlets and has been used in the opposite sense.”

It said Mr. Erdogan had used the example to demonstrate that an executive presidency does not depend on a federal system of government.

“If the system is abused, it may lead to bad management resulting in disasters as in Hitler’s Germany,” the statement said. “The important thing is to pursue fair management that serves the nation.”

Like seeks like. He isn´t the only NATO nutball to share an admiration and support for the Muslim Brotherhood with Adolf Hitler, that´s for sure. I´m sure that there´s lots of other common grounds.

Erdogan is emerging as a huge threat to peace. The more we see and hear from him, the clearer it becomes that he is a big part of the middle East problem. It’s time to tell Turkey to get out of NATO before they do any more harm.

Not going to happen. Turkey has the second largest army in nato. And many troops helping nato like in afghanistan. Has a strategic position near the middle east with important air bases. Protects western and american interests in the region. If it was kicked out it would move to other areas of influence. Maybe russia, china and iran. The americans would never allow that.

Spoken like a true Nazi, you need to learn to dissociate your leader from your country, he is a fallible human not the country.

Exactly. Equating the leader somehow with the country is the typical fascist state of mind. Has been seen before so that is nothing new.

With one of the biggest army and Erdogan up front, they are trying to push borders and recover the Ottoman Empire. Which is bad. Another Middle Ages.

Not possible. Turkey has a large army. But not large enough to stand on its own. Much less oppose american, russian, iranian, israeli, saudi, etc interests in the region. This is about erdogan solidifying his power. And crushing the opposition inside the country. Including the kurds. Not expanding the territory.

Yeah, but after the SU-24 take-off, Russian are getting closer with the Kurds and independent Kurdistan is getting in front line. Turkey will not be happy at all. And Kurds are pretending even for part of Iran.

Hitler start persecuting the Jews in 1933 but it took 11 years for the Allies to finally put themselves in position to stop Nazi Germany. ISIS started up in 2014 how long will it take this time?

The Iranian Kurds are more or less happy remaining in that country. Unlike Turkey, Iran has not attempted to ban the Kurdish language or to forbidden the local customs. Also, relations between the Iranian regime and the Kurdish groups have been quite warm recently. In Syria and Iraq, they are co-operating to a certain degree.

Agree. But if they manage to made independent Kurd County in the current territory on Syria and Iraq, next step is to request consolidation with the Iranian Kurds. And it will be more dangerous when SA and Iran are far from understanding. Turkey and USA are behind SA. Russia is may be behind Iran.
