I feel like the mailing list must be seriously misconfigured to allow this sort of spoofing... You could exploit this to send mail "from" any of the devs, for example.

Obviously this was a fake mail. If Satoshi was to communicate with anyone, it would be to resolve the conflict that's separating the community apart - the block size debate.
Just imagine if Satoshi was to contact  people every time someone shouts that he's founder of bitcoin; he might as well return to his btc account in that case.

Could also be some hardcore game theory action: fraudster (assuming that's what's going on here) knows who the real satoshi is and publicly claims he (the fraudster) is satoshi to put the real satoshi in a tough spot - either say 'no, i'm satoshi' or take on the risk of a media crapstorm.

Honestly, I don't see why Craig Wright went through all the trouble of seeking Investards when he could've easily became an Investard himself of Leroy Fodor's StakeMiners Ponzi, thus earning weekly dividends off its POS altcoins traded on Cryptsy enabling him to fund his Bitcoin bank endeavouuuuuur.
