The title says it all. I want to run a miner - a free energy environment - but for the purposes of allowing students to see how it all works. In essence, I just want to show them the 'live' mining rather than the charts that are confusing to them (often). It does not even need to be Bitcoin to mine. The core thing is to be able to do it in real time with minimal fuss (these are not computer science students who will want to know the mechanics, but business students who sometimes need to see it is a real thing).

Transactions must be included in a block to be properly completed. When you send a transaction, it is broadcast to miners. Miners can then optionally include it in their next blocks. Miners will be more inclined to include your transaction if it has a higher transaction fee.

Couldn't you CPU mine with just about any available computer for your demonstration?

I should have stated, sorry, that I'd like to show at least some kind of equipment.

Where do you live?

If in the USA I could get you an ant miner s-1.

It is plug n play. And you plug it into an Ethernet connection

It uses an atx psu.

Or I could get you a compac usb stick.

Which needs a usb hub and a pc to work.

How big of a miner would you want? There are relatively cheap used USB miners that work without much hassle but they'll only get you very small fractions of bitcoins. Getting a still profitable miner would naturally cost more so if your aim isn't profiting you'd better stick with small miners.

I feel like if you are running a miner, get both a USB and a miner like an antminer s-1 from what phil said.

The whole reason behind this is, you can show BFGminer or cgminer in action processing information on the USB.
And you can show larger physical hardware, and what ASICs have grown into. From small USBs to larger devices that are becoming more efficient. Also you will get roughly .0004 bitcoin per day to use and play around with if people are interested.
Then point these devices at a pool like kano.is, and watch over time accumulating some small increments of bitcoin (assuming you run the equipment for a week or so).

Or use a CPU or GPU to mine which is completely outdated and will produce almost nothing to use or play with.

Guide to installing BFGminer on a raspberry pi:
http://computers.tutsplus.com/tutorials/how-to-create-a-raspberry-pi-bitcoin-miner--cms-20353
This was the tutorial I used to setup my little lottery miner that has run for months at a time.

Place to store your Bitcoins (Unless you want to download a full client of 60GB):
https://www.coinbase.com/
The only reason I recommend this site is because they are American based, and you would not have to setup a full node. The downside is they will ban your account if you deposit to bitcoin gambling wallets.

Then mine to your coinbase wallet address on kano.is.
If you do a raspberrypi, this will be your command:
Code:
./bfgminer -o stratum+tcp://stratum.kano.is:3333 -O (coinbase wallet address) -S all

I would like to suggest "Bitmain AntMiner U3" instead since it would have a small physical presence to make you demonstrate as an asic miner that won't require too much space and it's not that small to not get attention as well so I think it would be a good choice for you plus it's setup is piece of cake as comparison to some other equipment's out there. You could buy them from the following links:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Bitmain-Antminer-U3-60GH-s-USB-Bitcoin-Miner-with-PSU-EU-UK-US-or-AU-plug-/351382274792
http://www.amazon.com/Bitmain-AntMiner-Bitcoin-Miner-Version/dp/B00TWK9208
You might be able to find cheaper deals as well (either online or from this forum).
