It's possible but not today, most probably somewhere in the future.

I know everyone says this about every bag they hold... but Decred might be the most undervalued project and one of my top 3 favorite coins right now. I have spent years crawling crypto projects, codebases, dev teams, etc. If BTC continues to languish, having a drop in replacement for existing BTC APIs and ecosystem tooling with superior hashing, fungibility improvements, LN, well tested code, good GUIs, company (aka. not one man show), established delivery, RFP process, transparency, good governance, democratic DAO hard forking model, "smart" smart contract proposal (I checked out github strawman), you guys know I can keep going.... seems like a no brainer. I'm definitely buying here boys, and I have pretty much every bag and wallet on CMC.

That 2017 roadmap was incredible, and the more I keep up with this project the more I'm impressed.

Could not have said it better myself!

The coming alt coin boom will be led by projects like Decred IMHO

Cheers m8

Thank you for the information, its been about a week and I haven't seen anything yet.

Its possible I did something wrong when purchasing the ticket or I am just not looking in the correct place.

just run dcrctl -u user -p password --wallet getstakeinfo

You'll get all the necessary info

just run dcrctl -u user -p password --wallet getstakeinfo

You'll get all the necessary info

I have been through all that and followed the setup directions

It shows one missed ticket and the proportion missed as one I guess I just need to wait longer to get the decred back

getstakeinfo provides some detail but not as much as I would like

I check getbalance often to see if the decred has returned

I am sure I will figure something out eventually, its just a sharp learning curve refreshing my memory with the current documentation

I only have a small amount so probably not worth my time or anyone else to pursue it more

I appreciate everyone that tried to help

Maybe you are referring when bitcoin is 10000 usd, decred can be 100 usd, otherwise there is not any chance. Be realistic my friend!

Anyone have some insight on when the best time to buy tickets now is, and how to estimate fees?

It looks like there are four points per cycle on the oscillating ticket price graph: 40, 80, 120, and 80 DCR, approximately. I've heard that fees go insane when ticket price hits that low point around 40ish, but I'm not seeing any fee info on dcrstats or in wallet with getstakeinfo command or whatever.

Any advice or suggestions appreciated...

dcrstats has a field with average fee. On the left hand side, at the same row with current price.

It's not fee per ticket though, but something related, like fee per a certain amount of size in bytes of the ticket transaction or something like that.
I think ticket fee works out at something around half of what dcrstats reports, but someone please correct me if I'm wrong

To avoid the fee wars, I'd suggest buying in the 40's and 50's range. These will usually go through even at the default/minimum ticketfee.
Lower ticket prices get quite competitive, but even then, on a couple of recent occasions, I've been able to pickup some tickets in the 30's range, with a ticketfee setting of 0.0666/Kb.

Personally, I stay clear of the 20's ticket prices, as I'm not a fan of the fee wars that ensue. To succeed at that range of ticket prices, I suppose one must really be using ticketbuyer (and conceding a large portion of the voting reward to ticket fees).

Thanks. I see the average fee field, but it always says 0. And if I click show fees they're usually all zero too (though I just checked and one was 0.01 not 0). I guess I'll buy a few when it goes down to 75 or 80 then try to get a few more under 40.

What are these tickets?

Tickets are the mechanism by which PoS works. You buy tickets which allow you to vote when your ticket is included in a block, and then also get some bonus DCR when you vote.

It says zero because there are 0 requests for ticket at that moment (hence no fees to derive an average). It's often the case at very high prices, like near or over 100.

Don't buy at 70 or 80, wait for prices 50 or below. Between 40 and 50 you'll almost certainly succeed at default fees

Since, I couldn't find this anywhere, I put together simple spreadsheet that has a table that shows the yield (% returns) on tickets based on ticket price and fee rate.

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1IE1gXeYoJHU_NDw-9YMfS-nihg0D4NBpK98ecRKe1Pk/edit?usp=sharing

As you can see you would have been better off paying 1.6 DCR fee rate in the last cycle than 0.01 DCR fee rate on this cycle at 68.51 ticket price. Copy the spreadsheet and have fun with it. Would be cool if someone creates a webpage like this.

I've added some extra granularity around the low fees to reflect what you would be paying at higher ticket prices and removed some of the really high fees that we haven't seen. It shows that there is a sweet spot around 35-40 where the return is higher given that fees will be lower. I've also added some extra data showing how many tickets you'll get for a given amount of DCR and what the absolute return is assuming that all tickets vote. The red cells are those that are highly unlikely ticket price / fee combinations while the yellow area is around where the minimum fees tend to sit for low prices. You may or may not get in at those fees.

This analysis also doesn't take into account missed or expired tickets, although it's low enough that it shouldn't be a problem.
